[They absolutely take a look at the card from where they stand, trying to figure out if it's the modern digital model, or an older model. The oldest they'd seen was a punch card system that used a material that could only be penetrated by tools gym leaders had.

Most likely. [Though their tone is as neutral as it has been most of their conversation, their expression is sympathetic.] Sometimes people go back home, but it's not universal. And sometimes people seem to slip out of this timeline, but we can't confirm they got back home.

This isn't to say the specialist structure should die out, to be clear, but I think that adaptation will require more than simply specialising, but being able to show the tactical strengths beyond type match-ups. Honestly, Whitney is ahead of the curve there, truly showing off fairy's potential.

has very little to do with types compared to common strategies such as weather, field effects, and status-based styles. Hoenn's approach is truly adapting to the modern world's needs, and I think some of the most impressive trainers are going to consistently come from there in the next 5-10 years.

It made sense back before the field was truly embedded, of course, to rely on type specialties, especially in places like Japan where a gym leaders were essentially town protectors before modernisation and bonding with pokemon culturally made that less needed, but the modern competitive field++

As for Ms. Matsuba, I'm quite glad. Since I spoke with her, I've kept up with her work and I'm duly impressed. I'm glad that Hoenn is moving away from the type-specialist movement. In the global trainer community type matters much less than certain types of skills when proving your abilities.

Thankfully, such issues are on the mend now. Unova going "Wow sure would be stupid if we ignored these pokemon that mass migrated to our region, expanding our biodiversity! They're part of our regional dex now!" was formative to the process.

He had even proposed making a sub-dex - like the Unowndex - to count migratory species, in an attempt to appease both traditionalists and researchers without compromising on the integrity of the field. The people in control found that even less suitable, because compromise was the enemy, basically.

They had counted pokemon like Exeggcutor because they had a habitat made for them, so they counted. Thereby, they could make Murkrow and Houndour count by doing the same. I do want to make one thing clear: Professor Oak was always on the side of science.

Acknowledging other migratory species meant also acknowledging that by their own logic, those in the 251 who were migratory did not belong there. Instead, they created breeding programs to help them thrive in Kanto, not as a means to cover up, to be clear, but to say "It doesn't matter now."

You see, there were some pokemon in the original 251 who were migratory rather than being found year-round at the time, such as Murkrow and Houndour. They're much more embedded in the modern climate, but at the time they were seasonal.

I find that pokemon often like the berries that lower the effectiveness of their moves, such as fairy types liking roseli berries. [Though they speak while watching the bird, they seem capable of paying attention to both trainer and pokemon easily.]

It also leaves an open space for, say, someone who has a grudge against someone else. Person A really likes Angel from [Series name here], and person B hates person A. Person B goes to one of those free image generators, makes a twitter account, spams the images every hour with tags.

There is a great deal of wiggle-room between completely ignoring traditions and reasonable rules, and between holding so fast to traditions that you ignore science and the increasingly global state of being a pokemon trainer. We're slowly getting closer to the middle.

Generally speaking, no matter which of our regions you look at, our nation is fairly conservative and traditional, so even if they had refused to let me use any pokemon on my teams that weren't in the original 251, I'm glad at the general loosening up.

It does help that the modern League system is spreading to different countries, and adapting for their needs - and even within the same country, such as the differences between Alola's League and Unova's. The more valid styles of League, the more Tohjo loosens up.

For instance, Hoenn has at least one Leader who isn't a type specialist, who wasn't a champion first - being a former champion being one of the things which denotes an allowance to eschew type specialty in Kanto - and is instead a weather specialist.
