…people. So figuratively we are in the midst of a trillion-alarm fire that’s blazing further out of control and soon will be unstoppable. You may be one of us who are wondering why, in such an extreme emergency, most folks are, well, in denial, or, “compartmentalizing,” or, “got their heads in the sand” or up some dark part of their anatomy. or “fiddling while Rome burns,” or any of the other things you’ve heard and observed from these others. You may be wondering at their complacency and their refusal to hear, even, that their lives and that of their families are on the line; or you may be astonished that they fail to see that their turning their back on this threat could be something they will hate themselves for, well, not long here, but if there’s eternity, well, that long.

So, readers already thinking this way will hardly be offended by the message from our nonhuman brothers and sisters, and will want to know what the message is. Thus, the purpose of life was to experience what one would as ego — as seemingly imperfect, muddled, and often out and out seemingly wrong, as that necessarily would be — in order to, by pain and unhappiness, be prodded into a path of return, spiritual return, primal spiritual return, back to Divinity, wholeness, and Grace.

You’re born, you become less, you create an ego, separate from the All, you have experiences.

These experiences enrich you, though they seem to be mistakes at the time.

You seek your own destruction through them, as well,

so that in this lifetime or many, you return to the All.

An Experiential Metaphysical — Experience Is Divinity and Funny God

Subsequent to these discoveries and their eventual postulations as theories, frameworks for understanding, and paradigms, came a further elaboration that involved a description of Reality as essentially Experience, with matter being metaphor for true existence — which was coincident with the findings of quantum physics and Idealistic and panentheistic perspectives of all times. This I did in Experience Is Divinity: Matter As Metaphor (2013). In it, I addressed the metaphysical basis of reality.

The Series continues with this book in your hand, which is the second of three parts of Dance of the Seven Veils. This book, the third volume in The Path of Ecstasy Series, answers the questions, what is the Divine Self? Do we have such an inner core of being that is positive, interactive with the Universe beyond us, helpful and healing, confident, powerful, blissful, and eminently loving? Indeed, do we have such a Self that might be categorized in the Hindu fashion as Satchitanda — meaning Being, Awareness, Bliss? If so, how did we lose it, so that we think we do not? And, how can we get it back?

This book is concerned with the time of our lives around birth; however it traces the psychological imprints from that time back into the womb. Risking It All

At any rate, the ensuing plot in Joe Versus the Volcano has provocative elements containing cornucopias of meaning. It shows Joe having to decide whether to sacrifice his newly won relationship with his anima ally — that is to say, the heroine, Patricia — for the benefit of an entire — but anonymous — community. This demonstrates that at a progressed level of the spiritual process — that having to do with one’s inter-connection with the larger community of living things, not just one’s personal unconscious — one must risk even one’s newly regained creativity, inner child playfulness, and personal feelings, that is to say, one’s anima. One might even lose one’s confidence, doubt oneself, question oneself, lose one’s self-esteem ... all one’s good “therapy” is threatened ... all the gains one made at earlier, egoic levels, where one gained pride and self-confidence are put at risk. All that one thought one gained in becoming the adult one is might be lost. The better, more integrated Ego, proud even of its gains of self as in incorporating the anima, is more than at risk; it must be let go of. No, in this greater task one will risk suffering again ... and on a deeper level and in a more profound way ... but there is the very real promise that it will at least be more meaningful and more transformative.

The Cosmic Soup

Yet arriving at that is another thing. Certainly throughout our lives, and especially in our youth, we must expose ourselves to the different possibilities for us so as to “find ourselves.” One’s life is limited, and it is hard to be anything but unhappy when carrying out preordained directives — prescriptions and proscriptions — given from the outside. That has contributed to many lost lives and miserable existences for far too many of us throughout history. Yet there might have been no alternative to that.

Today, not only is there no excuse not to seek a happy life in alignment with what one is most able and wants to do, it is tragic if within this Universal Soup of potentialities — wrought of the postmodern coming together of all cultures and knowledge — one allows oneself to be carried along in dismal obedience to the failed initiatives and fearful injunctives of those around us, of those who controlled and directed us at the time in our life when we had little say in things.

To go beyond that is a must if one is to experience fulfillment in life; and to do that one must experiment with life and experience outside the bounds of what one is given. We get a lot out of this immersion in the Cosmic Soup of Experience of what is possible.

These are “strange days indeed.” They are without doubt an unraveling of “the world as we know it.” You will see that in the midst of this, we might perceive it all as an unfolding, not unraveling, an apocalypse in the old-fashioned, archaic meaning of the term as revelation or a breaking down of the old strictures on perception and an opening to an actual cosmic overstanding of ourselves and our place in the Nature and the Divine. Hence, at the end of this, against all expectation, you might just “feel fine” ... or much better than that.

No, you will not see everything as rosy after reading this. You will not have learned we have been mistaken about the cataclysmic character of current events. In fact, you will be even more aware of the enormity of the events transpiring and how they have direct bearing on you, your life, and especially the lives of your loved ones. I will hardly help you in your denial and avoidance. Nope. Not any of it. Rather, like finding the eye of the storm, you just might discover your place within these apocalyptic winds. That perception of alienation, dismal existentialism, and the futility of personal connection was happening earlier, also, with the beatniks, along with the marijuana use of the Fifties. What follows from this perception is the conclusion that people are basically “phony,” or “plastic;” that life is unreal. Cultures Create Worlds

In fact, ultimately our world is defined in the part of the person that stores cultural information — the cerebral cortex. What this is saying is that cultures create worlds. One’s view of the world, arrived at through the process of enculturation in a person’s development, is determined by one’s culture, by the knowledge and experiences one has had in interaction with one’s society. The experience of hearing a particular sound is not known to be that of hearing someone talking to us, until the cortex defines those sounds as words.

Biology Creates Worlds

However, notice that before any cultural interpretation, those “messages” have had a journey through areas of the brain that define them prior to or outside of culture. Before any stimuli are interpreted as words, for example, a part of us determines that they are sounds.

Glimpses of clarity

Nonetheless, concerning the positive aspects of cocaine, it can be mentally enhancing partly because of its repression of fear. For fears, as mentioned, are both of the helpful-cautionary as well as the oppressive types. Being released from the oppressiveness of fears, being freed of the constraints of “fearful thinking,” can result in seeing one’s reality more clearly. Feeling fearless can lead one to acknowledging truths and realities normally defended against — thus being therapeutic even, getting a glimpse of reality outside one’s fears.

Reckless

Being freed from normal caution, however, can lead one into reckless activities with consequences far beyond one’s ability to handle in either a normal, or drugged, state. It is no coincidence that these stimulant drugs have seen heavy usage by wartime participants — notable are their use by fighter pilots and by American warriors in Vietnam.

The Hindus call this nishkam karma. It means one acts righteously and dharmically with no thought of reward ... indeed, with no concern about the consequences. Again, it is the mode of action not the ends that is important. The ends do not justify the means; the means justify themselves, and the ends are irrelevant: They will take care of themselves. And if one acts with true and pure intention, the ends will be better than they would have been otherwise, that is, if one had tried to control them. Indeed, attempting to control the end results of things that are actually out of one’s control does not only cause one to stray from right action in attempting them, but it screws up the ends — they do not turn out the way one wishes. Basic Perinatal Matrix I

To begin with, Grof’s Basic Perinatal Matrix I, or BPM I, involves the experiences and feelings related to the sometimes, or at least relatively, undisturbed prenatal period. The prenatal period is that time in the womb sometimes characterized by feelings of peace, complete relaxation, and a feeling of all needs met, or “oceanic bliss.”

BPM I corresponds to deMause’s societal periods of “prosperity and progress,” which he claims are accompanied by feelings and fears of being “soft” and “feminine” — understandably here, for in BPM I, that is, prenatally, the fetus is largely identified with his or her mother and is very much “soft,” that is to say, undefended.

This time in the womb may also be disturbed by toxic substances that the mother ingests — drugs, chemical additives, and so on — as well as by disturbing emotions that the mother experiences, which release stress hormones into the mother’s bloodstream, which then cross the placental barrier and affect the fetus. For these reasons, BPM I is also sometimes characterized as feelings of being surrounded by a polluted environment and being forced to ingest noxious substances, toxins, and poisons, which sickens the fetus.

Play Therapy and Reevaluations of Ego and Id

Descending as he did from the Freudian tradition — Winnicott was a student of psychoanalyst, Melanie Klein — still, Winnicott, like some others being mentioned here, differed with Freud, not just in his interpretations of selves, or components of the psyche, but in the way to do therapy. He saw the psychoanalytic framework involving an authoritarian analyst and a compliant client as fostering the false self. Instead he used play, in his therapies, as a way to bring out and foster connection with the true self, which he saw as having components of creativity, wholeness, and well-being.

Indeed, in seeing this component of personality, the true self — what Freud might interpret as the id — as being a source of healing, creativity, and growth, as opposed to the healing force emanating from the “rational” ego, his therapy was a turnabout on Freud’s. Similarly, his interpretation of what Freud would undoubtedly have called the ego as being a false self — one which blocks real aliveness, connection to others, and creativity, and is comprised of defenses seen as much less useful and necessary as Freud’s defenses were seen to be — is a similar significant revisioning of psychoanalytic understanding.

This is biological relativity, and what it adds to our understanding when seen as analogous to the other relativities is that it tells us:

Language

This motherese and cooing during evolution led eventually to lan- gauge. Certainly the roots of language are in the need for communication around survival while foraging in water. However, with secondary altriciality and the long extra time of mothering, that language ability was facilitated and enhanced. Along the same lines, the intense interaction between mother and child led to extra facility in what we had already been developing in facial expressions for the purpose of communicating. Like language, it is in the mother-infant interaction that particular skill is refined.

The uniqueness of this mother-infant time is easy to see when you compare us with other species. For example, think for a moment of the way we normally see a chimp or gorilla baby with its mother. Certainly they interact. Definitely they will occasionally play. How- ever, to a much greater degree, what you observe is a detached attitude of the mother with little to no eye-to-eye contact. That makes sense, when you think of it. For the babies being more mature when chimps and gorillas are born, they are past that time of excessive dependency required of humans. That means that chimps and gorillas can much more take care of themselves, even to the point that they do not need to be held but can cling to the mother’s fur. It follows that extra motherly attention is not necessary.

At any rate, what I am saying is that many planetmates have a kind of shared mind ... they participate in a kind of field of mind or understanding ... and that gives them the ability to know things they were not taught. In a sense, the species did the learning over the course of its evolution, and it is shared mentally by all members. If that sounds unbelievable, realize that what I just described is exactly the way one new biologist, Rupert Sheldrake, describes his theory of morphogenetic fields.5 More about that later.

In any case, now we have lost that shared mind. We have lost that ability. More correctly, we believe we have lost it, for we retain some ability of shared mind, or telepathy. An Experiential Metaphysical — Experience Is Divinity and Funny God

Subsequent to these discoveries and their eventual postulations as theories, frameworks for understanding, and paradigms, came a further elaboration that involved a description of Reality as essentially Experience, with matter being metaphor for true existence — which was coincident with the findings of quantum physics and Idealistic and panentheistic perspectives of all times. This I did in Experience Is Divinity: Matter As Metaphor (2013). In it, I addressed the metaphysical basis of reality. As I put it, the data from consciousness research calls for an existential metaphysical, one that takes as the basic unit of Reality to be one’s immediate Experience in any moment, with all its components of experience — cognitive, emotional, sensations, feelings, and experiences even subtler, for which there might as yet be no words.

I also put forth an understanding of spiritual or metaphysical reality and the corresponding life program and goals that come from it in Funny God: The Tao of Funny God and the Mind’s True Liberation (2015). Additionally, I introduced the notion of the No-Form State — as being the state outside of all falls from grace, both prior to Form ... that is, before the creation of sperm and egg ... and after Form, which is to say, after death.

Just as fresh to the field, it adds to that discipline by exploring the influences from our time of “prenatal hell,” during late gestation. That is something never really dealt with before and only written about by one other.3 So it is that this book has to do with the time after birth — the newborn and infancy periods — yet it extends back to the time before birth, the prenatal. However, the prenatal is divided into two separate Veils, which could not be more contrasting. There is the time of blissful existence during the first two trimesters of gestation. This is the basis of much of what I call the joy grids — which is the substratum of each human’s personality having to do with what gives them pleasure, joy, fulfillment, ecstasy, and bliss. It is our deepest self in this lifetime, and it is interconnected with the Divine. From which we had only a little time earlier separated, keep in mind.

It also expands on what happens, generally speaking, during the third trimester, when the fetus’s larger mass, in conjunction with the bipedal stance of humans, results in constriction of the blood vessels going to the prenate.

The extreme compression experienced by the unborn baby at this time already causes pressure from all sides on the body and increasingly more difficulty in movement. This crowdedness in the womb brings forth claustrophobic-like feelings in the prenate of wanting to explode yet being…

To go beyond that is a must if one is to experience fulfillment in life; and to do that one must experiment with life and experience outside the bounds of what one is given. We get a lot out of this immersion in the Cosmic Soup of Experience of what is possible. This is often the task of youth, yet it can occur throughout one’s life: trying out different experiences and possibilities of life.

Nevertheless, one must make something out of what one experiences. This is one of the most important themes of this book. In order not to spend one’s life in depression, one is required to bring out what was garnered through that life research and experimentation, positively, creatively — and in a fulfilling and socially satisfying way ... like a tree does in taking the nutrients it pulls out of the soil to manifest in leaves and blossoms and limbs. If one does not, one is like a drowned plant, underwater in a swamp ... unfulfilled, depressed, unhappy. At best, one is in an oar-less rowboat, directionless and drifting, in the middle of an infinite sea.

Yet there is the important question of how to determine these things. Of all that one can be, all that one could actualize in life, which are the few to which one addresses one’s precious time and efforts? Destiny, fate, and luck determine much, yet there remains an arena in which one can operate and make choices. …left behind, in 1972. In my bachelor’s thesis I sought to discover whether spirituality and God were real or were results of primal pain, as Arthur Janov contended. While approaching the project from Janov’s perspective and not entertaining spiritual interpretations in the least, I was shocked to both begin experiencing spiritual experiences in my primaling, which could not have roots in my primal pain, and to come across other primalers who were having spiritual, transpersonal experiences in their inner work as well.

Validity of Some Spiritual/Transpersonal Experiences

Furthermore, research into the literature and findings of this new field and into corresponding spiritual literature led me to discover, not only that such spiritual experiences were being encountered in deep experiential psychotherapy ... Grof’s work was significant here ... but also that some primal experiences of the not so spiritual kind were remarkably like experiences that had been described as being encountered on their spiritual path by enlightened souls both currently and in previous times ... Guru Swami Muktananda’s autobiography (1974) was significant in this respect. Had liberated souls gone through a kind of primal therapy on their way to enlightenment? It seemed to be so.
