Me today.... So glad the weekend is almost here 🫩 Etruscan amber pendant in the shape of a monkey, height 4.7 cm. Found in Vetulonia, Italy, dating late 8th/early 7th century BC. 📷 Soprintendenza per i Beni Archeologici della Toscana
Small translucent amber figurine carved in the shape of a squatting monkey. The figure has a detailed face with expressive eyes and rests its chin on its hands, appearing thoughtful. It sits atop a rectangular platform supported by four rounded, balloon-like legs.

A miniature masterpiece from 40,000 years ago! 🦣 🤩 This tiny carved mammoth figurine measures a mere 3.7 cm in length, yet the #IceAge artist captured naturalistic detail with aesthetic perfection! Mammoth ivory. Vogelherd Cave, Germany 📷 by me #Archaeology
My photo shows a tiny mammoth figurine carved from mammoth ivory some 40,000 years ago, dated to the Aurignacian culture. It is one of the oldest known works of portable art. It is viewed in profile with head to left, mounted on a thin dark metal display stand against a dark background. Although the figurine only measures 3.7 cm in length the artist suceeded in capturing naturalistic details combined with an aesthetic eye to create a tiny object which encapsulates the characteristic form, power, and beauty of the animal. The ivory is weathered, now a mottled yellowish-greyish-brown colour. The mammoth’s head is rounded with a long, slightly inward curved trunk. At the back of the head, the upper back rises into a distinctive rounded shoulder hump giving it a characteristic woolly mammoth form. The line of the lower back and rump slope downwards to a short pointed tail. The body is large with thick rounded forelegs, and slightly shorter, thick hind legs, giving it a massive and powerful appearance. It was found in 2006 in the spoil heap from the earlier 1931 excavations at the Vogelherd Cave in the Lone Valley in Germany’s Swabian Jura. The Ice Age caves of the Swabian Jura are a UNESCO World Heritage site.

A figurine of a hartebeest, made of flint, found in a cemetery at Hierakonpolis. It dates to the Naqada II period, 3650–3450 BC. The Naqada culture was a Chalcolithic Predynastic Egyptian culture. Hierakonpolis is a major site for studying this period. On display at Neues Museum Berlin. 📷 me 🏺
A flint figurine shaped like hartebeest. The objcet is brown and has a rough, chipped texture. It is mounted on a display with metal supports, casting a shadow that emphasizes its form.

Tallinn boasts 112 km of cycling routes, with the goal to exceed 300 km by 2035. Its aims for cycling to account for 11% of trips, while 70% of regional journeys should be made by walking, cycling or transit by 2035. Take a ride with us and see how the city is putting these ambitions into practice.
