Also, loved the analogue-ness of everything. Need to research a plant? - hit up the local library. Confronted by a dino and what to know more? - crack open the family Encyclopedia Britannica.

I went to see the End of Oak Street today. I didn't plan to but I just had to escape the heat. Fun film. Can't believe how many shots they used with split dioptre lens. Was that big in the 80s?

Loving watching Spider-Nior - Nick Cage is great. Love that his spiderman learnt to be human again by watching films, and that's why he talks *like that* sometimes. I think its well worth watching the black and white version - why not commit to the bit.

Soon after the English Civil Wars, or there abouts, a load of parrots got together desperate to worship in a way that felt authentic. Quaker parrots, being very social (and to some, noisy), this worship often involved periods of silence.

I love the local film society. I really do, but why do the majority of the films they show have to be so depressing? Give me some joy once in a while!

Went to a local May fair to watch a friend Morris dance - ended up joining in for one dance. Then watched a wildly enthusiastic woman lead the Maypole with absolutely contagious joy. Also, I won two prizes at the tombola! A surprisingly traditional half-day out for me.

If we stretch 'creed' to mean any and every expression of communal belief, then we will never say anything at all. We can share what we believe and act on it - that’s not a creed.

Quakers are non‑creedal. Drawing what we believe from direct experience of God. Discerned together in community. Led by the Spirit who makes all things new. But a creed isn’t just any old statement of belief. It's an authoritative formula that defines what must be believed in a tradition.

The guy did seem to see the funny side. Interestingly, it was a real masterclass in handling the unexpected while leading worship. The preacher managed it as elegantly as anyone possibly could. I would not have kept my composure!

Very exciting moment while visiting a church this morning. The preacher brought a hardboiled and a raw egg for an illustration, she meant to throw the boiled one into the pews, chucked the wrong one, and the raw egg exploded over the bloke who caught it. At least I think it was the wrong egg...

Every time I rewatch the Alec Guiness Smiley's People, I'm surprised that Patrick Stewart played Karla, for like, 15 secs of screen time at the end. Just plain forget. God, I love John Le Carre.

All bloody principles and practices, as to our own particulars, we utterly deny; with all outward wars and strife, and fightings with outward weapons, for any end, or under any pretense whatsoever; this is our testimony to the whole world.

While buying petrol today (what a luxury!), I saw a chocolate Easter T-rex! Not sure the connection to Easter, but I love it. I suppose T-rexs are one type of dinosaur. Birds are decended from avian (another type of) dinosaus. Easter chicks are birds. Bish bash bosh, there's your connection.

I suspect the local church will drop it some time soon as not many people participate. For 15 min, I was the only person there! But that's the way of things - church isn't for people like me.

I love the Maundy Thursday watch. I was there last night until just before midnight. It's this one moment in the year where my fractured faith life comes together. Something of church, something of Quakers - merging into one.

I'm late to the party but I have thoughts on RE4: 1) Camp gold. Charmingly cheesy. 2) I understand that Ashley can’t suplex anyone (like Leon), but why can’t she climb down a bloody ladder. I'm less fit than a teenager and can climb down ladders. 3) I forgot how frustrating quick time events are.

As Resident Evil Requiem has recently come out, of course, I'm playing RE4. I'm just not paying full price for any video game. I played RE4 when it first came out. But that was before I started really playing games and I was not good. I didn't get far but I vividly remember those first set pieces.

They’ve put a baker boy cap on Ozzy the Bull at Birmingham New Street Station. I wondered if I had just missed it before. Googled it when I got home, apparently it’s to promote Peaky Blinders. He’s far cooler (and sort of cute in a menacing way) when he’s moving with the glowing eyes.

Re-reading #ProjectHailMary in preparation for the film coming out next year. Super hyped. It's very much a love letter to science teachers. I wonder whether they are going to change the stucture of the story - I'm not sure all those flashbacks will work in a film.

When Friends intentionally stop what they are doing, become quiet and still, and pay careful attention to the Holy Spirit within them, they are adopting an Advent practice, waiting in hopeful anticipation for Christ to be born within them. The Quaker Faith: Friends of Love and Truth, p.78.
The image includes the quotation below on a light green background, along with a picture of "The Quaker Faith" book cover:

Quaker Waiting Worship as an Advent Practice

Although traditionally, Friends have not observed the Christian liturgical calendar, they hope to experience it inwardly as a spiritual participation in the birth, life, death and resurrection of Jesus… Advent is a period of waiting and deep reflection in preparation for Christmas, a time for remembering the birth of Jesus, and anticipating his second coming… When Friends intentionally stop what they are doing, become quiet and still, and pay careful attention to the Holy Spirit within them, they are adopting an Advent practice, waiting in hopeful anticipation for Christ to be born within them.

The Quaker Faith: Friends of Love and Truth, p.78.

I'm currently reading John M. Hull's 'What Prevents Christian Adults from Learning?' This book is full of really insightful gems. In the wider quote, he suggests this means Christian learning often happens in rare moments of creativity, rather than through the week-by-week life of the church.
Quote on dark background - text reads "The conservative nostalgia of a Christian congregation, often mistaken for Christian loyalty and faithfulness, may be directed toward its Victorian buildings or centered on minor liturgical conventions whose origins may date back no more than a few decades. The religious imagination, because of its ideological character, has a way of conferring the authority of antiquity upon the innovations of yesterday. John M. Hull - What Prevents Christian Adults from Learning? 1985"

I woke up early this morning and couldn't get back to sleep. So went the the kitchen to get a glass of milk, looked out the window and saw Venus!! The 'morning star' indeed. Odd but wonderful to see a planet with the naked eye.

I’m surprised it was such a flop when it came out. I wonder if it would fare better today. Stop motion (a medium painstakingly crafted by human hands) feels like it might pick-up a kind of premium in this age of AI slop. A 21st-century Arts and Crafts movement? William Morris, eat your heart out.

On a friend’s recommendation, I just watched Kubo and the Two Strings (2016) A lovely stop-motion film with such a charming story. The animation is utterly beautiful, it's intricate, flowing, full of expression down to the smallest facial movements #FilmSky #StopMotion #Cinema #KuboAndTheTwoStrings
Still from the film Kubo and the Two Strings. Main character Kubo (11 year old kid), with Monkey and Beatle Samari.

I believe that Queries are one of Quakerism’s gifts to the wider Church. Fun fact: I once shared some of my favourite Quaker queries with my Anglican spiritual director, and she warmly thanked me for passing on “these Quaker guidelines”. Which was slightly jarring and I couldn't quite describe why.
Text reads: "Dearly beloved Friends, these things we do not lay upon you as a rule or form to walk by, but that all, with the measure of light which is pure and holy, may be guided; and so in the light walking and abiding, these may be fulfilled in the Spirit, not from the letter, for the letter killeth, but the Spirit giveth life. Postscript to an epistle to ‘the brethren in the north’ issued by a meeting of elders at Balby, 1656"
