I went to see the End of Oak Street today. I didn't plan to but I just had to escape the heat. Fun film. Can't believe how many shots they used with split dioptre lens. Was that big in the 80s?

Loving watching Spider-Nior - Nick Cage is great. Love that his spiderman learnt to be human again by watching films, and that's why he talks *like that* sometimes. I think its well worth watching the black and white version - why not commit to the bit.

I love the local film society. I really do, but why do the majority of the films they show have to be so depressing? Give me some joy once in a while!

Went to a local May fair to watch a friend Morris dance - ended up joining in for one dance. Then watched a wildly enthusiastic woman lead the Maypole with absolutely contagious joy. Also, I won two prizes at the tombola! A surprisingly traditional half-day out for me.

Quakers are non‑creedal. Drawing what we believe from direct experience of God. Discerned together in community. Led by the Spirit who makes all things new. But a creed isn’t just any old statement of belief. It's an authoritative formula that defines what must be believed in a tradition.

Very exciting moment while visiting a church this morning. The preacher brought a hardboiled and a raw egg for an illustration, she meant to throw the boiled one into the pews, chucked the wrong one, and the raw egg exploded over the bloke who caught it. At least I think it was the wrong egg...

Every time I rewatch the Alec Guiness Smiley's People, I'm surprised that Patrick Stewart played Karla, for like, 15 secs of screen time at the end. Just plain forget. God, I love John Le Carre.

All bloody principles and practices, as to our own particulars, we utterly deny; with all outward wars and strife, and fightings with outward weapons, for any end, or under any pretense whatsoever; this is our testimony to the whole world.

While buying petrol today (what a luxury!), I saw a chocolate Easter T-rex! Not sure the connection to Easter, but I love it. I suppose T-rexs are one type of dinosaur. Birds are decended from avian (another type of) dinosaus. Easter chicks are birds. Bish bash bosh, there's your connection.

As Resident Evil Requiem has recently come out, of course, I'm playing RE4. I'm just not paying full price for any video game. I played RE4 when it first came out. But that was before I started really playing games and I was not good. I didn't get far but I vividly remember those first set pieces.

They’ve put a baker boy cap on Ozzy the Bull at Birmingham New Street Station. I wondered if I had just missed it before. Googled it when I got home, apparently it’s to promote Peaky Blinders. He’s far cooler (and sort of cute in a menacing way) when he’s moving with the glowing eyes.

Re-reading #ProjectHailMary in preparation for the film coming out next year. Super hyped. It's very much a love letter to science teachers. I wonder whether they are going to change the stucture of the story - I'm not sure all those flashbacks will work in a film.

When Friends intentionally stop what they are doing, become quiet and still, and pay careful attention to the Holy Spirit within them, they are adopting an Advent practice, waiting in hopeful anticipation for Christ to be born within them. The Quaker Faith: Friends of Love and Truth, p.78.
The image includes the quotation below on a light green background, along with a picture of "The Quaker Faith" book cover:

Quaker Waiting Worship as an Advent Practice

Although traditionally, Friends have not observed the Christian liturgical calendar, they hope to experience it inwardly as a spiritual participation in the birth, life, death and resurrection of Jesus… Advent is a period of waiting and deep reflection in preparation for Christmas, a time for remembering the birth of Jesus, and anticipating his second coming… When Friends intentionally stop what they are doing, become quiet and still, and pay careful attention to the Holy Spirit within them, they are adopting an Advent practice, waiting in hopeful anticipation for Christ to be born within them.

I'm currently reading John M. Hull's 'What Prevents Christian Adults from Learning?' This book is full of really insightful gems. In the wider quote, he suggests this means Christian learning often happens in rare moments of creativity, rather than through the week-by-week life of the church.
Quote on dark background - text reads "The conservative nostalgia of a Christian congregation, often mistaken for Christian loyalty and faithfulness, may be directed toward its Victorian buildings or centered on minor liturgical conventions whose origins may date back no more than a few decades. The religious imagination, because of its ideological character, has a way of conferring the authority of antiquity upon the innovations of yesterday. John M. Hull - What Prevents Christian Adults from Learning? 1985"

Gospel order is the order established by God that exists in every part of creation, transcending the chaos that seems so often prevalent. It is the right relationship of every part of creation, however small, to every other part and to the creator. Lloyd Lee Wilson
The image includes the quotation below, along with a picture of Lloyd Lee Wilson (an older white man, with a long white beard, wearing a light blue shirt, and black braces):

Gospel order is the order established by God that exists in every part of creation, transcending the chaos that seems so often prevalent. It is the right relationship of every part of creation, however small, to every other part and to the creator. Gospel order is the harmony and order which God established at the moment of creation, and which enables the individual aspects of creation to achieve that quality of being which God intended from the start, about which God could say “it was very good.”

A quote I love from Thomas Kelly's A Testament of Devotion. Whether we call it the Christ Within or the Spirit, the Light calls us to live more wholly, more lovingly, from the inside out. Returning again and again to that still centre, where love begins again.
The Inner Light, the Inward Christ, is no mere doctrine, belonging peculiarly to a small religious fellowship, to be accepted or rejected as a mere belief. It is the living Center of Reference for all Christian souls and Christian groups—yes, and of non-Christian groups as well—who seriously mean to dwell in the secret place of the Most High. He is the center and source of action, not the endpoint of thought. He is the locus of commitment, not a problem for debate.

Practice comes first in religion, not theory or dogma.
And Christian practice is not exhausted in outward deeds. These are the fruits, not the roots. A practicing Christian must above all be one who practices the perpetual return of the soul into the inner sanctuary, who brings the world into its Light and rejudges it, who brings the Light into the world with all its turmoil and its fitfulness and re-creates it (after the pattern seen on the Mount).
--Thomas Kelly, A Testament of Devotion

I just re-read The Tombs of Atuan, and wow. You remember how good Le Guin is but then you dive back in and rediscover it all over again. The way she gets inside a character’s head and lets you truly see them. The way she writes places, bringing them to life like characters. Just wonderful. #Earthsea

I still can't get my family to believe - let alone do - what I learnt living in the south of France: To cool the house down, keep the windows shut when it's hotter outside. And remember: light is heat. Keep curtains or shutters closed on the sunny side. It's not counterintuitive - it's just physics.

There’s something a little abrupt about Easter. In Holy Week, you journey with Christ to the cross—slowly, deliberately, with space to breathe. Then suddenly: BANG. Christ is risen. He is risen indeed. Alleluia. And yes, resurrection is joyful—but in the Gospels, it’s not so sudden....✝️

There's something a little symbolic about a rosary breaking on Holy Saturday. It was the first one I ever bought - bit of a cheap one because I wasn't sure I wanted to commit to the practice. I found all the pieces (it's a smaller Anglican Rosary ✝️), so I can mend it.
A small white circular bowl, with the broken pieces of an inexpensive plain rosary in there.
