SH2 - In the final game, the "Burning Man" painting depicts the Lakeview Hotel on fire, foreshadowing its real fate. However, in a prototype build and in the Art of Silent Hill DVD, there is a painting of a ghoulish Mary above a town street.

The Silent Hill Chronicle offers the idea that the fog could represent or manifest the thoughts of the many dead people at the bottom of Toluca Lake from over the years. This includes the casualties of an epidemic, the missing Little Baroness ship, and the blood of executed prisoners.

All the way back in SH4, in the official staff interview for the game's Konami Guidebook, Masashi Tsuboyama (art director and monster designer) shared the idea he had of a giant monster that the player could never see in its entirety. Unfortunately, the idea didn't come to fruition.

Interviewer: Finally, could you tell us about any rejected creatures or characters you wanted to create?

Tsuboyama: There was something giant...something like when it was walking around, you could see only part of it at a time. I wanted to create something where you gradually got a better sense of what it looked like as it walked around.

SHf - The game links to Silent Hill 1 through the Hakkokusou flower and the Crimson Water. In SH1, the White Claudia flower possesses the same characteristics as the Hakkokusou and was similarly used for rituals. Their seeds are also manufactured into drugs by both places.

I have learned from reading "Exotic Herbology" that Kakura-makakura is made by grinding up the seeds of Hakkokusou, an extraordinarily rare herb.

Hakkokusou is notoriously difficult to cultivate as it requires a very specific environment in which to grow. Rarely found in the wild, this precious medicinal herb is so prized that it has earned itself the title of "the flower of the gods."

According to folklore, the herb can give one the ability to converse with gods, visit their lands, and even awaken dormant powers. With the manifold divine experiences this herb is rumored to provide, it is no surprise that numerous legends talk of kings journeying to find it under the belief it holds the key to immortality.

When ground, its seeds are said to smell of peaches.

HC - There are some unused items for the Otherworld Shepherd House's puzzles. Three of them are toys for Josh's puzzle in the bedroom (in the final game, there's only a Robbie doll, but there are still four windows), and a scrapped "happy" mask for Lillian's puzzle.

A "cat" doll. It has wide turquoise eyes, somewhat rounded ears and a short tail. Its fur is dark brown, almost grey, with white bits around the mouth, belly and toes.

A "moose" doll. It has large antlers, small ears and dark brown eyes. Its fur is a brown coat, and has very light brown bits around the snout, belly, hands and feet.

A "raven" doll. It has medium wings and large talons, as well as a black tail. The rest of its body is a very dark grey, including the talons and beak. Its eyes are black with a small shine.

Lillian's "happy" mask. It's another ceramic mask with empty holes for the eyes and nostrils, but the lips are contorted in a somewhat wide smile.

A 70-page comic adapting SH1 was finished for November 1999 and later for a SH2 special edition, but it was never released due to conflicts between Konami's Japanese and European branches. According to the artist, it was stored in a CD that is now long lost.

SH0 - A note heavily implies that the Gillespie house fire was caused by the ritual and not on accident, and frames the SH1 newspaper as part of a cover up. While moving the fire to the second floor was a liberty Origins took, the original SH1 guidebook already hinted at the source being the ritual.

A: A ritual that Dahlia performed using Alessa.

Dahlia originally thought that Alessa would follow in her own footsteps as a spiritualistic medium for the cult, but realized that the ritual would be far more likely to succeed if she used her as the surrogate mother to bring about the descent of the cult's god. And so seven years ago, Dahlia performed the technique to bring about the descent of the cult's god using Alessa in the cellar of her own house. Although it seems the cult has a place they use for rituals, Dahlia was confident that she would be able to summon the malevolent deity if Alessa was the surrogate mother; therefore, as it was not necessary to choose a location, she impulsively carried out the ritual in her own basement. The ritual process involved a great deal of fire, which consequently escalated into a conflagration. Incidentally, there is information in the game about "six houses that burned down in the business district," but the actual site of the fire can't be located on the business district map. It seems the houses were completely torn down during those seven years.

SH4 - The Nahkeehona are a pair of mysterious rocks in the Silent Hill woods that the Holy Mother faction of the cult worships, a tradition carried over from the original natives of the area. Joseph Schreiber found his sword of obedience in one of these rocks during his confinement.

In 2006, Climax Studios pitched a new Silent Hill game to Konami, now known as Broken Covenant (from a later attempt). It featured Father Hector Santos in an Arizona town, where SH's influence has spread. Both towns start merging and buildings from SH's history materialize everywhere.

SH1 - Harry and Cheryl's original names were Humbert and Dolores Mason, as a play on Humbert and Dolores from Lolita (specifically, Kubrick's adaptation). This was quickly recognized as a bad move, so they were renamed to Harrold (after Harry Inaba, game localizer) and Cheryl (after Sheryl Lee).

SH2 - Before South Vale became what it is today, it used to be mostly a swamp connected to the lake. Prison executioners would pour bloody water used to wash their tools into it, so there's plenty of rumors about ghosts in the district. The swamp was filled in with land later, and became South Vale.
