Guilt isn't a personality flaw in bipolar disorder-it's a pattern.
Mania and depression can both push you toward actions and words you wouldn't otherwise choose.
When the episode lifts, your brain is left holding the memory without the chemical state that drove it.

#WIPSnips: press Dodging horse patrols, Aubrey Prowse has led Burke & Maguire across the darkened strand to meet Pascal in a small sailboat. Once away from the shoreline, they rendezvous with the sleek Breton smuggler Razorfish. vocab: buan = quickly (Br); na Sasanaigh /'sasanee/ (Ir) = English.

Heavy timbers creaked and loose canvas snapped in the wind as the dark sails of a tall ship loomed out of the charcoal-grey twilight. Prowse unshuttered the lantern as the two-masted pinnace came alongside a long, narrow-beamed bisquine carrying an overwhelming press of sail on three masts.
“Père est touché!” Pascal cried. “Baissez l’échell’, vite là!”
Sailors aboard the larger vessel scrambled to lower a Jacob’s ladder.
With the lilting nasality of French all around, Maguire steadied the injured priest as he gained his footing on the rope ladder’s wooden rungs.
Nimble crewmen descended in silence to help Burke. Other dark figures swung to the smaller craft on ropes as if from the heavens. They quietly furled the pinnace’s sails and struck her masts, booms, and cordage by the glow of Aubrey’s solitary lantern.
Maguire climbed behind Burke, taking his first step into a world completely outside his ken. A powerful arm jerked him onto the deck. In that instant, everything felt utterly foreign—the language, the shipboard world, the shadowy contours of foreign faces. The salt air hung heavier here; the stinging wind bit colder.
The deck pulsed and vibrated underfoot, alive in ways the land never was or could be.
“Buan, buan!” a gruff voice barked. “Mettez voil’, allez! Les crapauds foutus vienn’ nous prendre! Allez!”
Burke grabbed Maguire’s arm. “Help us forward.”
The priest limped past the mainmast fife rail toward the darkened bow.
“What’re they sayin?” Conall asked, steadying Burke.

Burke turned his head. “To get underway before the toads catch us.”
“What’s a toad?”
“What they call the English. A wee spotted fella—like a frog, only lumpy with warts, and plenty ugly. Should ye touch it, it screeches and pisses on ye. Only found on the Kerry coast.”
“Would that we only found na Sasanaigh there as well.”
Seamen hauled the pinnace toward starboard davits as impatient commands summoned more hands. The same gruff voice began shouting orders again.
“An holl sur l’pont, vite! Bordez les voiles!”
