Reposted by Random Dangling MysteryBetter Things Are Possible @internethippo.bsky.social · 18/04/2026The political history of the U.S. since the 1970s is basically that thing where a species' predator disappears and the species overpopulates and destroys the whole habitat. If centrists really wanted a "Normal" right, their top priority would be to bring back the left 162073355

Random Dangling Mystery @sidslang.bsky.social · 8hI think growing up with Peak Simpsons and getting old while it drags on endlessly in zombie form naturally gives one a more philosophical long view on this sort of thing, it's very true 020
Random Dangling Mystery @sidslang.bsky.social · 9hLindsay Ellis, who is a fine critic even if I don't always agree with her takes, said in her Hobbit Quadrilogy video essays that those movies being bad diminished the Lord of the Rings Trilogy and I'm sorry, I couldn't disagree more, that was a wildly wrong take. 110
Random Dangling Mystery @sidslang.bsky.social · 9hI do really question the "Subsequent Bad Thing ruins Prior Good Thing" style of criticism, though. I get that it's frustrating when a story starts well and ends poorly but still. The first four seasons of Game of Thrones are still there, they're still really good! 110
Random Dangling Mystery @sidslang.bsky.social · 9hYes, I got that from the post, no worries. BB's male fanbase seemed worth a mention, still, but it tends to be a different flavor of dude, true. [Better Call Saul is better anyway ;) ] 010

Random Dangling Mystery @sidslang.bsky.social · 05/10/2026Thích Quảng Đức lit himself on fire to protest the corrupt colonial-capitalist-friendly government of Ngô Đình Diệm and its persecution of Buddhists. I suppose it was some common enemy with Communist North Vietnam but he was a religious cleric, famously not Communists' favourite folks. 000
Random Dangling Mystery @sidslang.bsky.social · 05/10/2026This is political history minutae and clearly not the reason people mistake Rage's politics but you gotta admit that a bunch of Communists putting the self-immolation of a Vietnamese Buddhist monk on their album cover is a bit of a mixed message. 100

Random Dangling Mystery @sidslang.bsky.social · 05/10/2026One thing to do in reply to the ideological bubble or lack of exposure argument is to make the interlocutor be specific. What conservative ideas do you think I'm ignorant of and why are they valuable additions to our politics and society and economy and culture? Tell me what you think they are. 111
Random Dangling Mystery @sidslang.bsky.social · 05/10/2026I do think it's kind of cope for both left and right to just class political disagreements under brainwashing or ignorance or even mental deficiency when the truth is that different people just see the world differently because that's harder to reckon with but that's what it is. 111
Random Dangling Mystery @sidslang.bsky.social · 05/10/2026I'd like to give conservatives the courtesy of acknowledging that they're approaching liberal/leftist ideas in the same way and honestly disagreeing but current conservative orthodoxy is so infused with lies and propaganda and blinding bigotry that it isn't accurate to say that, sorry to say. 122
Random Dangling Mystery @sidslang.bsky.social · 05/10/2026This is it, as succinctly stated as I've ever seen it done. We're not isolated from conservatives and stuck in a bubble whixh prevents exposure to their ideas. We know what they believe. We disagree and therefore reject those beliefs. Simple as. 172
Random Dangling Mystery @sidslang.bsky.social · 05/10/2026Finally and less positively, there's a detail where the Ohioan subjects of the piece hear a Haitian say something in a strange and unintelligible foreign language and obviously it's French and I'm sorry but some Americans are degenerate yokels who have no right to hold themselves superior to anyone 000
Random Dangling Mystery @sidslang.bsky.social · 05/10/2026An important bulwark in your own heart and mind is to fight cynicism and nihilism. They can be tempting in the face of malevolent opponents and craven and collaborationist "allies". But they are the weapons of the enemy. The foundations of their view of the world. Believe that it can be better. 100
Random Dangling Mystery @sidslang.bsky.social · 05/10/2026A maddening thing about conservative views is that everyone knows on some level that they're wrong. People lie about holding them or characterize them differently because they know how bad they make them look. Media obfuscates them for the same reason. But they persist. It's heartbreakingly cynical. 110
