Thanks for taking a look. Yeah, unfortunately no remote option at this time (would need to be on-site in NYC, Austin TX, or Los Angeles CA)

Follow up! Were you able to develop/intuit the whole thing or did you have to look up and memorize the algorithms? I can intuit the first two layers but have to look up the algos for the final layer

Getting hand, foot, and mouth was not on my bingo card for 2024, but here we are 😳 For anyone who has gotten it as an adult, how screwed am I? (I already have the worst sore throat I can remember)

I just switched sidpalas.com, devopsdirective.com, and courses.devopsdirective.com from Plausible to GoatCounter 🐐 I used to self host Plausible, but: 1. The free credits for the VM I was running on expired 2. A couple of times the clickhouse instance storing event data filled up the disk with logs

I debate whether or not to purchase things (or which option to buy) long enough that if I spent that time doing client work I could just pay for the item with the extra money... 🙈

Security pro tip: if you find a USB key on the ground somewhere, DO NOT plug it in to your home computer. Take it to the office and plug it in there. They have way better software that will mitigate any threats.

*3x5 heavy squats (3 times per week)

Yeah, eventually 3x5 heavy squats becomes too much volume for me, but at that point I just switch to a different program!

This is data from a specific program (startingstrength.com/get-started/...) I often use when coming back to lifting from a haitus which makes it an apples to apples comparison! The gaps are a mix of actual time away from lifting and running other programs!

The cool thing about keeping a workout log is being able to look back and see how much you lifted 5 years ago... 💪 The sad thing about keeping a workout log is being able to look back and see how much you lifted 5 years ago [compared to now]... 😭

The Mac Mini: - is around $600 cheaper for equal specs - can be configured with 64GB memory without having to jump to the top tier m4 max - is more practical to have attach semi-permanent external storage to - (probably) has better thermal management

I'm seriously considering getting the new Mac Mini + portable monitor instead of a MacBook Pro... Most of the time, I work out of my home office. Once a week I work elsewhere, but at a desk (and already bring keyboard + mouse + iPad for sidecar). 👍 or 👎?

What did I miss? What drives complexity within your software systems? How do you manage these and prevent complexity from exploding?
000
Sid Palas @sidpalas.com · 19/11/2024
6. Compliance Requirements -- You should be protecting your users' data anyway, but if you work in regulated industries, the various compliance frameworks add another layer of complexity to your systems/processes.
100
Sid Palas @sidpalas.com · 19/11/2024
5. Deployment Targets -- In addition to how you are deploying your application(s), where you are deploying your applications matters too. Moving from a single cloud to multiple clouds or a hybrid cloud/on-prem setup will increase complexity significantly!
100
Sid Palas @sidpalas.com · 19/11/2024
4. Deployment Models -- Each deployment model (serverless, VMs, Kubernetes, managed containers) requires patterns, automation, and monitoring. If you can pick one and stick with it, your life will be much easier.
100
Sid Palas @sidpalas.com · 19/11/2024
3. Databases -- Each database type you use will require: provisioning, monitoring, backup/restore, and expertise for operating/tuning. The longer you can get away with a single database, the better off you will be!
100
Sid Palas @sidpalas.com · 19/11/2024
2. Languages -- When you operate within a single programming language, you can leverage all of the tooling/ecosystem built up for that language. As you move to two+ languages, you now need to establish patterns for working with each language and add tooling that supports them!
100
Sid Palas @sidpalas.com · 19/11/2024
There are 6 primary dimensions of complexity in these types of systems: 1. Users -- If only one person builds/uses a system, they can make many simplifying assumptions about approaching problems. As more people need to interact with a system, the more robust it needs to be!

What causes DevOps complexity? Why do software systems devolve into a world of pain and toil? It is due to a topic I have named... The DevOps Chasm! 🧵
