I've been thinking similarly to what you mention re: Doug Ford's meddling recently. What he did was wrong not just in its own right, but in a broader sense for the damage it did to democratic legitimacy in the city.

Have you decided against trying to appeal to the SCC? I know the decision it was unanimous but there are quite a few novel legal issues at play.

So many people act like they have some brave Truth when they say that there needs to be police cracking down on homeless people, but no one will utter the most forbidden truth- if we raised Ontario Works and ODSP significantly and had cheaper rent, homelessness would plummet.

There's a great book about that moment- Hearts On Fire by Michael Barclay. Tons of history and fascinating first hand accounts of the Canadian indie boom.

Hopefully this place is next. Worst AI slop ad I've seen and there are lots of them out there.
Advertisement for Brick N Cheese French Tacos. The item depicted is clearly AI generated, with horrific looking chicken that appears to be breaded with centipedes, brown pieces akin to rabbit droppings, and uncannily perfect fries in a wrap held by hands that appear to have spent too long in a kiln.

Similarly, I always want to ask bike lane opponents to show me one example of a big city that overdid their cycling network. Like show me one city that put in a good connected and protected network of bike lanes, but no one uses them and traffic got much worse.

sibtiger50.bsky.social @sibtiger50.bsky.social · 14/08/2026
Later, it compares the govt action in this case to the harms caused in Bedford. "Removing bicycle lanes is in no way analogous to... exposing citizens to a high risk of being murdered to prevent nuisances." Sloppy reasoning. The outcome for this case was also an increased risk of being killed.

The purpose of this trick is to avoid dealing with the clear evidence in the original decision of the increased harm and death that will result. The court avoids whether the Act can be connected to these harms not by engaging with the evidence but by saying it's is just repealing a law (it's not.)
100
sibtiger50.bsky.social @sibtiger50.bsky.social · 14/08/2026
The decision pulls some little tricks to avoid the hard issues. The first is that it acts like the bike lanes in question are purely legal abstractions rather than physical parts of the city. It equates a positive act of requiring removal of the lanes with repealing a law. But they are not the same.

This is something you see all the time in these discussions. Traffic studies are closer to physics than to ethnography or whatever. But conservatives put them on the same level as studies about racial bias (at least when they support bikes.)

If nothing else do these people not see how many people are using Uber Eats and similar services every day? Whatever your thoughts about those apps, they show very obviously the utility of bikes for transport.

I visited Victoria as a tourist in a rental car and didn't park on the street once. We parked at the hotel and mostly walked around the city- the downtown is not very big! And there's lots of parking garages. The idea that tourists would have nowhere to park without street parking is insane.

The WSJ article from a few weeks back laid out his strategy pretty clearly. It's all about delay and diversion while working to build up other relationships to weaken their leverage over us. I'd guess this is considered an acceptable loss to him as part of that plan.

One case is not a metric. There are many other cases that look nearly identical from the outset and don't breach, especially where bail was complied with for 4 years beforehand. Without hindsight, how could you have predicted this would happen, out of the hundreds of cases where it doesn't?
000
sibtiger50.bsky.social @sibtiger50.bsky.social · 13/07/2026
What metrics do you consider "failing" when it comes to bail? Violent crime has been going down since the pandemic spike. You realize that even if bail is granted "correctly" 99% of the time, with 4000 arrests per week there will still be dozens who breach?

If he opposes the actions of the US federal government on this issue, why would he ask Canadians to give up a powerful point of leverage without getting anything back? Most trade retaliation involves some domestic pain but this is not only painless it's downright popular.

I didn't see any Democratic officials or mainstream figures stick up for Canada when the threats were at their worst. At most they said tariffs were bad for the US, but no one said that Canada is a sovereign nation and that should be respected. The NYT even ran an op ed in support of annexation.

Yes, they are just as or more susceptible to groupthink as others in the organization. The ideas of these personalities become conventional wisdom, and not only do all execs think it's what they should do, but it becomes an expectation of the board/shareholders in that same info environment too.

www.realtor.ca/l/bXRIi/ja I'm quite confident it will be replaced by a 4 bed SFH that will list over 3 million in a year, even though it's literally next door to a great example of gentle density (the sixplex at 237 Manning).

Or even this exact neighborhood. A total teardown was just listed a couple blocks away for $1.2m. Most houses in the area go for 2-3 million. Even on College and Dundas there are only a handful of buildings over 3 floors.

On the subject of judicial declarations isn't the idea to have the law assessed so that when the 5 year limit on the NWSC is up, the law automatically becomes void if the clause is not renewed?
