Might be worth checking the last one for P. readeri, though I'm still leaning towards patens for it.

Wonderful day trip to Scilly yesterday with point blank views of Sora and Wilson's Snipe! Was not expecting a guest appearance from a Spotted Crake as well. This may have been my last crossing on the Scillonian III, if so, what an incredible trip to end with! #UKBirding #FarewellScillonianIII

Not a problem! Apparently it hasn't been found this morning yet but I'm sure it's hiding away in one of the many fields around there.

It was in the fields here - maps.app.goo.gl/8nQwjymsagGw... . It's a fascinating bird to watch, I'm increasingly less bothered by twitching but had no regrets in going to see this bird.

What was meant to be a quiet day of walking around West Penwith soon turned into quite the day of birding! Utterly incredible views of the Upland Sandpiper were bookended by two equally tame buntings - Lapland at Pendeen and Snow Bunting (self-found) above Cot. All photos taken with phone+bins!

Wow! I'll have a look next time I'm passing. Was the Physcomitrium readeri doing as well this year?

It turns out there's just one known site on the Cornish mainland already, which was found by John Poland earlier in the year.

Sorry this is likely too late now but one colony is at SW357285. The other is at Pendeen but I don't have a grid ref to hand unfortunately.

Not sure if you're heading out west, but I think there are a few undetermined Limoniums out in West Penwith. Can send grid refs if you're interested.

Nice find! Think we've had this one a few times but can check the local database when I'm home.

Thank you, I'm swamped at the moment but will have a bit more of a think once autumn comes around and will likely be in touch. It would be a shame to lose this species from Cornwall for good.

Perhaps reservoirs could be the answer to reinforcing the British population. The Cornish reintroduction seems to have failed unfortunately.

Perhaps Athyrium?

A sec cal + Buff-breasted Sandpiper was found today at Drift Res. (2nd Aug) by Louis Parkerson. It arrived with two Little Ringed Plover. There are c. 190 records for Cornwall but most are juvs.

Can people stop using AI to edit photos? I’ve seen so many “edited” photos where they have been run through CGPT and the like and its literally added plumage features etc that don’t exist or are completely wrong🤷🏼‍♀️😞

Agreed👍Hope you managed to find a few of the other goodies round there. Astragulus alpinus and Sagina saginoides spring to mind from my trip last year.

Louis P @sibthorpia.bsky.social · 26/07/2026
Exactly! It seems to be one of the more frequent drawdown species in Cornwall.

Or if they weren't put through AI in the first place...

A few highlights from a fabulous trip to north Cornwall today - Bog Orchid (Hammarbya paludosa), Chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile), Chives (Allium schoenoprasum) and Cornish Sea-lavender (Limonium cornubiense). #stillflowering #wildflowerhour

I think I've also ended up admiring the same bit of wall in the past few months! The rock cutting also looks really interesting, I'd love to revisit once they've finished the new road.

A few tiny things from Berry Head this morning - Ononis reclinata (Small Restharrow), Bupleurum baldense (Small Hare's-ear) , Centaurium pulchellum (Lesser Centaury) and Trinia glauca (Honewort). The first two required lots of searching on all fours! @bsbibotany.bsky.social

Do you know of any good references in a UK context discussing its effects on biodiversity etc? Would be good to integrate into my reports but tricky without evidence to back it up.

Thanks, that species isn't in Stace so I'll have to do some more research. The referee seems to be happy it's the hybrid though, but would like a specimen to confirm. Given it was one plant amongst good numbers of both parents, I think that is the most likely explanation.

Polypogon viridis (Water Bent, left), Polypogon monspeliensis (Annual Beard-grass, right) and what I believe to be their hybrid (centre) from Portland last week. Hopefully to be confirmed by the Poaceae referee soon - would be the fourth UK record if confirmed.

I found Hoary Rock-rose to be locally dominant on the cliff edge last autumn. Spiked Speedwell was a bit trickier as I was post-flowering but I found two patches towards the end of the headland on the clifftop. The latter's population has been recently reinforced through planting.

I think Plymouth has to take the top spot for me, with Hugh Town a close second.

This year I've finally bitten the bullet and begun looking at whitebeams. Earlier this week it was the turn of the Menai Strait Whitebeam (Sorbus arvonicola) - easily separated from Sorbus aria at the same site by the grey leaf undersides (comparison in the last photo). @bsbibotany.bsky.social
Sorbus arvonicola leaves at the top of the photo, greyer than the Sorbus aria leaves below.

I'm a bit late for #wildflowerhour as per usual but South Stack Fleawort (Tephroseris integrifolia subsp. maritima) has to be worth a post! I'm sure many a botanist will recognise this view.

It doesn't strike me as Northern Marsh, but yes definitely worth bearing in mind in Norfolk even.

Scilly definitely had an influx of Painted Lady over the weekend - we had a dozen on one clump of Echium!

A bit late for #wildflowerhour but a long-awaited trip to Bryher for the miniscule Dwarf Pansy (Viola kitaibeliana) was very successful, with hundreds of plants found rubbing shoulders with other tiny gems such as Small Adder's-tongue and Spring Vetch. @bsbibotany.bsky.social

A successful post-work twitch this evening - Kentish Plover on Long Rock Beach. They don't get much better than this!

The Cornish endemic Western Ramping-fumitory (Fumaria occidentalis) is my contribution to this week's #wildflowerhour. This colony is probably the best known in the country, having grown on a car park edge on the Lizard for decades!

The stunning vivid purple flowers of Pasqueflower (Pulsatilla vulgaris) in the early morning sun are hard to beat! These were my first, but it might have to become an annual pilgrimage for me. #wildflowerhour @bsbibotany.bsky.social

Hi Alexander, do you know whether it's possible to extend the season of when a species is considered sensitive. Slavonian Grebes turn up at breeding sites in March in the Highlands but I think are only classed as sensitive from April. Several potentially vulnerable sites show up on eBird...

While Mibora minima (Early Sand-grass) is usually at home on coastal sand dunes, this species has recently colonised the lawns of an estate in Thetford - where it has become locally dominant in places! #wildflowerhour

Anyone who knows me well will be aware that my favourite plant family are sedges, so I was particularly pleased to encounter Carex ericetorum (Rare Spring-sedge) for the first time on Tuesday! The Brecks is a stronghold for this scarce sedge of short, calcareous grasslands. @bsbibotany.bsky.social

Perfoliate Penny-cress (Microthlaspi perfoliatum) was also a real treat to see on my way back home yesterday. Hundreds of plants adorned a few sections of this fairly unassuming Cotswold dry stone wall. @bsbibotany.bsky.social

A stop at Brean Down in Somerset was very productive, with its unique assemblage on the S-facing limestone slopes. White Rock-rose, Dwarf Sedge & Dwarf Mouse-ear were in fine form already, while Somerset Hair-grass and Goldilocks Aster (far out of reach) were vegetative only @bsbibotany.bsky.social

I thought I'd check in on Sand Crocus (Romulea columnae) at their sole Cornish site (rediscovered in 2002) and was astounded to find hundreds in flower already! I counted at least 564 flowers over two outcrops. @bsbibotany.bsky.social

A few early-flowering species for #wildflowerhour- Gagea bohemica (Radnor Lily), Draba aizoides (Yellow Whitlowgrass) and Hornungia petraea (Hutchinsia).
