Summary:
That had never been part of his plan. Leaving Vash, hair blackened and his body and mind flayed by Knives' own hands, in the care of strangers-as Millions Knives himself slunk off into the desert sands to die. His body had started to disintegrate before they even touched down on the sands outside the church, shedding pieces of decaying matter and stardust as he staggered towards his brother's salvation. The energy it had taken to rebuild himself from bones would not last into the night, and Millions Knives did not want Vash to watch as he crumbled in agonizing slow motion.
So, Knives leaves. He slips out the back door while the father and child of Mesa Probe Church tend to an unconscious Vash, on silent, padding feet scattering energy in his wake. An apple tree sprouts from one shallow footprint; against his better judgment, Knives grants the seedling a burst of his own fading power as his cloak slides from his shoulders. It would be put to better use, he thinks, given to something that intended to grow rather than rot.
The child tries to call for Vash when Knives turns his back on the tree.
—And then Millions Knives walks into the dune sea of No Man's Land, and he does not die.

Knives’ hair is two-toned middle-parted platinum and lighter while his skin is marginally darker, while Vash’s hair is darker/bright gold and his skin is marginally lighter. Knives does not have their usual mole, Vash does. Both have sharp, triangular eyebrows and long noses, though Vash has bigger nostrils while Knives has a slight curve. Knives’ eyes are thin with long eyelashes, heavy lids, and eyebags/wrinkles. His eyes are a dark blueish-purple. I called them his jeyes (jeans eyes) as I was drawing. Vash’s eyes are large, almond-shaped, and have big fluttery eyelashes like the shoujo ml he is. They’re also teal, though more blue than green. He is making a dreamwork’s face (one raised eyebrow) at Knives and smiling in a way that kind of makes me want to punch him in the face (which means i succeeded at executing my vision). Knives is scowling but kind of smugly at the viewer. Knives had sharp cheekbones and a lot of frown wrinkles from scowling for a hundred and fifty years. Vash has a rounder, friendlier face, a chin dimple, and smile lines from having a singular coping mechanism to rely on for a hundred and fifty years. Knives’ stupid little hair antenna are tiny while Vash’s could be used to sense his surroundings in the dark if he really wanted to.

The text for each says:

Vash: “The Broom Beast.”

They are, as the text says, UNCANNILY identical, which I think is kinda necessary for the whole explanation in the first episodes. Same facial structure, same eyes, same brows, same nose, same lips. Their features are designed to resemble the series’ Dependents, with strong aquiline noses that lead into their brows and big round eyes with long lashes. The only differences between them are their color palettes, the placement of their matching dimples/inverted moles, and Vash’s slightly longer hair. Knives’ palette is cold and washed out, with silver hair, pale skin, and grayish-purple lips. His eyelashes and brows are also a light gray-blonde. His eyes are greenish teal, and he has a dimple at the bottom corner of his downturned mouth. Vash’s palette is warm and saturated, with dark golden hair, a flush to his cheeks, and sky-blue eyes. He has thin sideburns on the sides of his face down to his jaw. He has a dimple by the corner of his upturned mouth. Knives’ eyebrows are angled slightly downwards while Vash’s are raised, making him look unguarded. Look i know people love giving these two specifically a comical degree of sexual dimorphism but i think it’s so silly when they could beat the twins from the shining in a Twin Contest. the lets be clones with mama flavor. the seeing each other in the reflection of their own face. the guilt and responsibility. idk. this took me half an hour to write youd better be reading it and laughing with me or i swear to god ill
