I rant about the worst boss in all of Mario: the Fawful Train.

The Fawful Train from Mario & Luigi Bowser's Inside Story is still the worst boss in all of Mario if you ask me. Mario isn't known for having great boss fights except in the RPGs, but I can't think of one that's as gimmicky and painful to do like the Fawful Train. It's a Giant Bowser battle and the gimmick is simple: you have to destroy the train before it crosses a weak bridge at the end and the only way to damage it is by breathing fire. Sounds simple in concept, but in execution is painful. To breath fire you have to blow at the microphone steadily and sustain it till Bowser's done, which I wouldn't mind if it wasn't the only option for like 90% of the whole entire fight. It takes around 8 blows to kill the train provided that you're doing it well and are coutering every attack the damn train does.

When I first played this, I literally finished with an itchy throat because I failed the train gimmick leading me to do it twice. Doesn't help that I was using a DS emulator and my phone's microphone at the time wasn't the best at picking the blowing up especially with me slowly getting tired from blowing a lot, and I can't imagine anyone doing it easily if they get physical issues doing so. The only saving grace is that it's the only improved thing in the 3DS version because you don't need to blow at the mic to breathe fire there. You can argue with me which Mario boss is the worst, but the Fawful Train will forever be the one I look forward to the least.

I'm gonna ramble a bit about open-world games, because I keep seeing a lot of heat for them and I want to put my two-cents in the whole thing.

I wanna ramble a bit about open world games because I've been hearing so much heat and debate about it.

Generally speaking, I'm not against a game going open world in concept, or any open-ended feeling game. I really enjoy the sense of freedom of just exploring a world or area at your own pace, doing whatever task or mission in any order you want, or just enjoying the scenery and immerse yourself in the environments. This sense of freedom of doing whatever you want however you want is in my opinion the main appeal of those games.

One of the reasons I see so much flack towards those games is because of how just overused they are and how the worlds themselves can be very empty and baring. Even though the only true open world game I got my hands on to some extent was Zelda Breath of the Wild, there are other games I've played and seen that have their own sense of openness that I'd like to talk about. I think an open world game can fail as one if it's either too big and spacious for its own good or if there's nothing to do in it other than just explore it. Naturally, you're going to be the one who's exploring those worlds and doing the stuff in it, but if a world is too big that it feels like it takes forever to explore and move around or if the content in it is not enough to justify the world's scale, then navigating those worlds will in of itself become a chore. The immersion and enjoyment will go away because then it'll feel too empty and huge to explore.

When I was playing BotW, I was enjoying the moments where I was exploring the world and finding stuff to do like the shrines as well as the major areas of the game I would find like Zora's Domain and the areas around it, but there were also times where I felt like an area was just so empty that I feel like there should've been something there like a fight or some kind of shrine, boss, or minigame there. I know it's supposed to be a big world and this takes place in a post-apocalyptic Hyrule, but the empty areas t…

Now, I did mention other games that have about just as much openness as open world games, because really, I don't think you need to make a by-the-numbers open world game to make a game feel open-ended. Really, you can take almost any genre and apply the core things I mentioned about open world games and give those games that same feel. There are a lot of RPGs out there that do for instance as well as platformers. For the latter, my mind comes to games like Super Mario Odyssey, Bowser's Fury, Sonic Frontiers as they have the stuff that makes an open world enjoyable but they aren't necessarily open world games, hell, by that logic Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie counts for that as well.

But if you want me to bring up a game that's not open world in that sense but is very open-ended, lemme introduce you to Legend of Mana on PS1. In that game, progression is done by completing missions which opens up more missions that you can take, you can take as many as you want as long as it's available and do them in any order you want, not only that you can also recruit any character you want in your party assuming they're recruitable to begin with. But Legend of Mana's main gimmick isn't just those, but it's the fact that you shape the world around you that you explore by using artifacts you find and get and creating those locations, but where you place them is also important because depending on how far that area is to your home it'll affect the difficulty of the enemies and bosses there, essentially making you choose where you think would be the best place to put the location. I don't think Legend of Mana is a perfect game by any means- I have my gripes with it, but I have a lot of respect for it for trying to be open-ended in it's own way.

So, at the end of the day, I don't think a game being open-ended is automatically a bad sign nor if any game is trying to be open-ended. As long as the game gives you the options to do what you want at your own pace and the exploration itsel…
