Also, like, I'm not sure how useful "I would simply be home to two of the world's top universities"/"I would simply be within commuting distance of one of the richest cities in the world" are for the question "how do we get productivity up in Leeds/Manchester/etc"

Isn't the answer "US cities have agglomeration from cars" per @jburnmurdoch.ft.com? www.ft.com/content/9aa0...

Won’t somebody please think of Britain’s poor £2m homeowners? Oh, wait – everyone already is | Jonathan Liew
Contrast the furious reaction to Rachel Reeves’s ‘mansion tax’ to the response offered to those living with real housing injustice: indifference, says Guardian columnist Jonathan Liew

Countless Labour voters have told us they are disheartened by the amendments to the Planning and Infrastructure Bill. Here’s a selection of these voters calling on the Government to not abandon the reforms we so desperately need.

Think I am talking about a different kind of "sensibilism"

Shreya Nanda @shreyagnanda.bsky.social · 19/05/2025
Also I mean I do think part of it is that the timeline from "moderates gain control of the Labour party from the left" and "moderates get into government" was much shorter than it was last time round, and therefore the think tank ecosystem had less time to adjust

Think I'm mainly describing a slightly earlier period when there was genuinely a lot of intellectual energy at the ASI; right now the smart people on the right have moved to/set up cross-partisan institutions

Not sure I get what you mean re "sensibles against economic liberalism"?
200 0
Shreya Nanda @shreyagnanda.bsky.social · 19/05/2025
, while those on the centre/centre left increasingly came to self-identify as sensible and negatively polarised themselves against any new ideas

Shreya Nanda @shreyagnanda.bsky.social · 19/05/2025
To put it slightly differently, think dealing with crises requires new thinking and breaking old consensuses, and during this period feel that basically people of the "edgy contrarian" sort basically self-sorted into either the right or the anti-Blair/anti-Starmer left

Shreya Nanda @shreyagnanda.bsky.social · 19/05/2025
Think the answer to the former question is partly about the capture of centrist institutions by sensibilist thought, which then finds itself unable to deal with major crises/significant deviations from the norm. Systems tend to ossification over time

Shreya Nanda @shreyagnanda.bsky.social · 19/05/2025
Not sure the answers are the same tbh. The conservative party may be intellectually vapid at the moment but there is lots of thinking on the right going on that it could engage with if it wanted to

No because neoliberalism was pro-rentier whereas YIMBYism is about reducing their power to command scarcity rents

You might be a pronatalist without even realising it With our economy increasingly stacked against young people, even basic social democratic policies like redistributing wealth and making housing more affordable act as pronatalist in practice

Is the red wall the same group of seats as "seats where Labour came first and Reform second"?

Shreya Nanda @shreyagnanda.bsky.social · 29/01/2025
Yes but the argument was that if people moved out of other sectors into construction, wouldn't this leave labour shortages in those other sectors

In other sectors, not construction, hope this helps

I don't think "we should have listened to the people arguing against a self-evidently terrible policy" is a good argument for the idea that we should listen to people arguing against all policies

Sounds like the best time to start is still now! Also I don't think allowing a few more engineers to enter the country counts as "mass immigration", nor is it particularly unpopular with the public

Certainly also agree that we should use policy to increase and speed up build out rates, alongside being ambitious on supply
000 0
Shreya Nanda @shreyagnanda.bsky.social · 03/12/2024
But I very much think we also need to take other action alongside this - the number of long term vacant properties is around 260,000, or around 1% of the UK's total housing stock

Shreya Nanda @shreyagnanda.bsky.social · 03/12/2024
Hi Anthony. I definitely agree that councils should have more powers to tackle long-term vacant properties and bring them into use

Shreya Nanda @shreyagnanda.bsky.social · 03/12/2024
You'd have to ask them! Personally I think it's important that we try and address all factors making housing unaffordable - it's such a big and urgent crisis that we can't afford not to
000 0
Shreya Nanda @shreyagnanda.bsky.social · 03/12/2024
It's definitely also a distribution problem! Imo we urgently need to tackle both distribution and supply simultaneously

Addressing multiple aspects of the crisis will get us further than addressing some and excluding others

Shreya Nanda @shreyagnanda.bsky.social · 03/12/2024
My broader point is that the supply argument isn't in conflict with other explanations of the crisis like arguments around credit or tenure. Many different factors have led us to the point where we are now

Hi Jacob. I actually do mention the supply of credit here. I would have liked to develop all of these points more, but unfortunately was constrained by the word limit
