In essence, the WTC was a giant system build tower made from prefabricated parts. Our own experience with LPS tower blocks in the UK (Ronan Point) where components have little to no redundancy was evident. That's why Grenfell burned but didn't collapse even when wrapped in lethal cladding.

Post 1993 fireproofing had barely been started either by 9/11 leaving many floors virtually unprotected. NIST observed that the building's entire lightweight design that allowed it to be built so tall in the first place relied on structural components like trusses that would be fatally compromised.

It is public record that after the 1993 bombing several problems had not been dealt with by 9/11. The primary one being the fact that the inner core could be breached by smoke and the stairwells were too narrow to rapidly evacuate the entire building. They relied on "stay in place" as at Grenfell.

Anyone that wants to allow corner cutting in building management of any kind needs to be strapped to a chair Clockwork Orange style and forced to repeatedly watch footage of Bradford, Kings Cross, Piper Alpha, 9/11, and Grenfell on repeat until they work out why the corners exist.

Feels like he's still clinging to the idea that Exhibition Road wasn't a total failure and that the evolution away from that somehow is a personal slight? To quote after Paget-Brown resigned... you need a clean break with the past, Danny Boy.

These signs have been restored recently to feature this red colour matching newer signs, but I still despise that 1998 addition from when BwD was created.
A pre-Worboys Darwen boundary sign, with a horrible 1998 add-on for when the Borough of Blackburn went unitary.Pre-restoration of the same sign.

The roads in question were primary from the 60s, but local destinations were often signed with white signs and blue borders. showmeasign.online/2017/03/29/l...

The A47 to the west has been dualled now so westbound has plenty of opportunity to overtake. Eastbound, well, tough isn't it?
000
Bryn Buck 🏳️‍🌈💛🤍💜🖤 @showmeasign.online · 03/10/2026
Aha! Yes, that road is a special case anyway being the end of the line (A47 being renumbered over A12 to Lowestoft aside). It's def. too narrow for safe overtakes, and at 50 mph it would still only take about 8 to 9 mins to travel. The damage done by dualling outweighs the safety on that one.
110
Bryn Buck 🏳️‍🌈💛🤍💜🖤 @showmeasign.online · 03/10/2026
Is this a short length between two existing duals? That is a design failure right there if so and goes back to my point about consistent highway design. Piecemeal dualling has caused many problems. The limit on NSL single carriageways really should be 50 mph for both HGVs and cars regardless, mind.

Bryn Buck 🏳️‍🌈💛🤍💜🖤 @showmeasign.online · 03/10/2026
If traffic is congested to the point people are arguing for a dual carriageway to improve traffic flow I struggle to see how average speed cameras would make any difference. ASCs are of course a specific answer to a specific problem.

And a fix that would cost maybe £3k is being expanded into a fix that will cost ten or twenty times that no doubt. This stuff happens far too often.

Ah great. Silo thinking and thus another argument for scrapping NH and creating regional roads authorities that aren't just parochial unitaries trying to score points against each other (see also the many problems with the TfGM KRN) where LA boundaries are concerned. Too many failure points there.

Bryn Buck 🏳️‍🌈💛🤍💜🖤 @showmeasign.online · 03/10/2026
Summary; the biggest argument against road building in the UK is that most road designers are utterly incompetent?
000
Bryn Buck 🏳️‍🌈💛🤍💜🖤 @showmeasign.online · 03/10/2026
As for not releasing documents, RSAs done to GG119 are FOIable documents and cannot be withheld - if NH refuse to co-operate there then the ICO should be involved. The decision making process regarding a pedestrian crossing is not commercially sensitive or confidential either.
110
Bryn Buck 🏳️‍🌈💛🤍💜🖤 @showmeasign.online · 03/10/2026
Semi-signalised roundabouts exist elsewhere as well. They definitely shouldn't have put an independent crossing immediately before the roundabout, but that can be mitigated by louvres over the green signal and providing upright Give Way signs and full give way markings at the entry point.
220
Bryn Buck 🏳️‍🌈💛🤍💜🖤 @showmeasign.online · 03/10/2026
In what universe is it safer to not have that crossing under signal control? Is there some detail we're missing, like is the forward visibility wrong? Or was it "cars have to stop so we don't like it"? There are hundreds of signal crossings at roundabouts elsewhere that work fine?

Bryn Buck 🏳️‍🌈💛🤍💜🖤 @showmeasign.online · 03/10/2026
But equally, reopening a railway that merely plugs into an already overloaded station in a city centre isn't creating a better rail network. E.g. people who keep screaming "just reopen Woodhead" singularly fail to answer what you do about the lack of capacity at Piccadilly and Castlefield.

Bryn Buck 🏳️‍🌈💛🤍💜🖤 @showmeasign.online · 03/10/2026
The A1 is a classic example of a fudge where a bypass is also designed to connect every local road as well as the unnecessary giant retail centres built alongside it. Such roads need adjacent planning and access controls that extend beyond the Ribbon Development Act parameters.

Bryn Buck 🏳️‍🌈💛🤍💜🖤 @showmeasign.online · 03/10/2026
So whilst it's absolutely right to stop the M4RR, using this as a blanket argument won't actually lead to good transport planning. Economics shouldn't even be the, er, driver. That's TAG mentality. We need much more focus on social and safety benefits of schemes - the M4RR fails on these.

Bryn Buck 🏳️‍🌈💛🤍💜🖤 @showmeasign.online · 03/10/2026
It suits the Treasury to never build anything, yet if they want to cut the welfare bill and free up NHS money the fastest way to do it is to completely rethink our entire transport infrastructure from the smallest footpath to the largest motorway and make the right facility for the right journey.
110
Bryn Buck 🏳️‍🌈💛🤍💜🖤 @showmeasign.online · 03/10/2026
But by the same token, the strategic road network needs to be fit for purpose and it simply isn't. The Dutch still have huge motorways because they don't want cross-European freight in their historic town centres. We still have roads like the A49 slicing through the absolute centre of Hereford.
210
Bryn Buck 🏳️‍🌈💛🤍💜🖤 @showmeasign.online · 03/10/2026
Updating rural roads and providing safe foot and cycleways alongside them would be a massive step to reconnecting places that currently lack the population density for public transport to ever be viable. You can't "never build anything" out of car dependency. Travel suppression isn't modal shift.
130
Bryn Buck 🏳️‍🌈💛🤍💜🖤 @showmeasign.online · 03/10/2026
Improving geometry and standards on existing roads shouldn't be stopped because people might dare to use them afterwards though. The Dutch understand this, their road network is designed around safety and it shows. Consistent design features, not having random high quality next to goat paths etc.

It shouldn't be a zero sum game; where there is a solid argument for a road (e.g. the alternatives wouldn't be viable and that's proven without rigged metrics from TAG or the safety of people using it) then yes build it. The M4RR fails massively on both of those examples though.

Fuel for personal use certainly suggests that, although the effects of high diesel prices thanks to Trump being an imbecile over Iran coupled with the El Nino effect upon farming this year doesn't bode well for food security across much of the globe next year.

I was stopped by an opening on Tuesday; it's fascinating but it reaffirms my view that having the central ring road around the capital running across an 18t limit bascule is insane. There was an ambulance forced to wait - and the openings are at least 10 mins. Buses delayed too. How do you fix it?

I chatted with someone about this and apparently the legal framework for Silvertown and toll collection stops Blackwall N being used for this purpose.
