These signs have been restored recently to feature this red colour matching newer signs, but I still despise that 1998 addition from when BwD was created.

A pre-Worboys Darwen boundary sign, with a horrible 1998 add-on for when the Borough of Blackburn went unitary.

Two of the oldest surviving signs in Manchester here.

Rather old blue bordered sign on the A56. City Centre 1 1/4, Victoria Stn 3/4, Deansgate 1 ahead. Cheetham Hill 1 1/4 left, and Lr Broughton 3/4 right.

Old blue bordered sign on the A6010. Newton Heath 1/2, Miles Platting 1/2, Belle Vue 3, Manchester Airport 14 ahead. Harpurhey, Blackley 1 left. Ancoats 1, Piccadilly 2, right.

Failure to trim back the tree notwithstanding, there are several issues with that new sign.

Most people wouldn't notice but the right hand lane drop sign is outright wrong (wickets were replaced in 2002 for permanent lane drops) whereas the correct curved arrow signs don't usually appear in roadworks - it's rare to see narrow lanes operate around a permanent lane drop!

3 into 2 lane drop signs using correct curved arrow for a permanent arrangement despite being within TTM.

One of the rare Ws from National Highways here - removing an extremely annoying 5 into 4 then back into 5 bottleneck to be 5 lanes throughout is a simple safety improvement. Why this section wasn't done this way to begin with is a mystery... Here's my equivalent of Streetview.

2017 view of the J44 1/2 mile gantry. This was originally J45 hence the weird number panel - when the motorway was extended north they failed to replace the outdated A1 reference.

A64 Leeds, York | The NORTH, Wetherby A1.

By 2023 the gantry sign was looking very degraded. The central reservation lighting had also been converted to LED.

March 2026 and the incorrect A1 reference has finally been corrected. The hard shoulder is being strengthened to continue the 5th lane.

The central reservation has a new concrete barrier and lighting.

The new 5 lane layout in situ, awaiting the installation of the overhead signals but otherwise complete.

I'm fairly sure this is the only surviving "flyover" type sign as seen in the 1964 "information signs on all-purpose roads" document in the whole UK? Seen here in 2004 and 2020. @scotroadsarchive.bsky.social unearthed a photo of the original gantry ones on the Tay Bridge approaches recently.
