literally one of my favorite parts of this piece. the way dicksee illustrated it its almost like there’s an invisible string tying their gaze to each other

either way despite its resistance, visually it almost makes the horse look like its bowing, ultimately just as helpless as its master to her whims. n as for its master, the way the knight is just uselessly holding onto the straps, gripping them so tightly despite having lost all control to the lady

its the reins. in the poem she is described as simply being placed upon the knight’s pacing steed, but in dicksee’s painting she takes hold of the reins, pulling them quite tightly based on the horse’s position, that or the animal is just resisting on principle, perhaps aware of the lady’s nature

my favorite is this one by frank dicksee, i love the interpretation of the horseride shown here
