Halp! I ran a study and SO MANY of the open responses were just the same chat gpt response. And if I wanted to know what chat gpt thought I would have just asked the robot 🥲 Is this just the state of research now? Are there things people are doing now to offset the impact of AI in survey taking?

And the Mechanical Turk is usually operated by people being paid lower wages in a different country
Just over half of Amazon Fresh stores are equipped with Just Walk Out. The technology allows customers to skip checkout altogether by sca ning a QR code when they enter the store. Though it seemed completely automated, Just Walk Out relied on more than 1,000 people in India watching and labeling videos to ensure accurate checkouts. The cashiers were simply moved off-site, and they watched you as you shopped.

Pairing instructions to not use ChatGPT with a warning about the consequences of using it (i.e., not being paid) leads to a significant reduction in ChatGPT use in surveys
Bar chart showing that participants who were not given instructions and those who were given instructions to not use ChatGPT used the program at similar rates. A warning about use reduces it to 1%.

New pub out in Sex Roles on gender differences in Q&A participation at virtual conferences! We observed 4 conferences that varied in size, topic, gender base rates, and Q&A format (e.g., video vs. chat) and found men disproportionately use collective Q&A time. link.springer.com/article/10.1...
Consistent with power and status differences between men and women in society, men tend to participate more than women do in question-and-answer (Q&A) sessions at in-person academic conferences. This gap in participation in scientific discourse may perpetuate the status quo. The current research examines whether this gender gap in participation in Q&A sessions extends to virtual conferences, which have become more prevalent during the COVID-19 pandemic. Due to shifts in conference formats to enable asynchronous, anonymous, and/or simultaneous participation, we examined whether virtual conferences are more inclusive, and mitigate the gender gap in Q&A participation. Across four virtual conferences that varied in gender representation and Q&A structured format, men continued to take a disproportionate amount of time and space in Q&A sessions. Disproportionate participation did not significantly vary between in-person and virtual formats and did not systematically vary by how the Q&A...
