One thing I love about this time of year is the big spiders and their beautiful webs. Spiders seem even bigger this year - maybe they could get big enough to catch all the extra crows about the place. #bristol #uk

I was listening to The Rest Is Science and it talked about humans just being an animal. But also that we are the only ones who can protect the earth from some threats. The tree frogs won't save us from an asteroid strike.

Finished reading `Snuff` by Terry Pratchett. I liked `Thief of Time` so wanted to read some more Vimes. Mostly liked it but the ending felt a bit weak. Pratchett had a sweet view of police officers. Does ACAB include Sam Vimes? #pratchett #bookstodon #acab

Have 3 hours to wait at Paddington until my train. Decided to go for a wander around nearby Little Venice. Its very pretty and there and along the canal past the station. Have stopped for a hot chocolate and reading my book.

Writer and environmentalist Wendell Berry has died at age 92. Here's @AssociatedPress's tribute to the author and poet. Below is the text of one of his most famous poems, "The Peace of Wild Things." flip.it/IMwWDb #Books #Bookstodon #WendellBerry
The text of The Peace of Wild Things by Wendell Berry

The Peace of Wild Things

Wendell Berry

When despair for the world grows in me

and I wake in the night at the least sound

in fear of what my life and my children’s lives may be,
I go and lie down where the wood drake

rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things

who do not tax their lives with forethought

of grief. I come into the presence of still water.

And I feel above me the day-blind stars

waiting with their light. For a time

I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.

from Openings: Poems (1968)

Hello from the top of the Empire State Building, where I am running WNYC's overnight programming from our little backup studio in the sky while Con Ed is doing work at our main studio downtown. #WNYC #radio #NYC
A photo of the view out the window of WNYC's transmitter room at the top of the Empire State Building, looking downtown towards lower Manhattan, all lit up on a Friday night. One World Trade Center is one of the many landmarks visible in the distance. A photo of WNYC's backup studio at the top of the Empire State Building. The lights in the room are turned off. A small radio mixing console sits on a desk, with a computer monitor above it which shows the Zetta radio automation system running. A microphone and a laptop running another audio program are also on the desk. Behind all that is a window looking out on lower Manhattan. A photo of New York Public Radio's transmitter room at the top of the Empire State Building, with several large racks of equipment for the transmitters of WNYC and WQXR. A red WNYC banner (vintage early '00s design) is hanging above a couple of the racks.
