Growing up, my stepdad used to fly a hot air balloon. I used to help out on dozens of flights, and I've also flown in dozens more (I think 28 times?) He taught me about clouds, as obviously you want to know the atmosphere... This, FWIW, would not be a good day to fly.

"Pułkownik" means "coronel" in Polish. I have been reading Tana French's novels, and in the last one a character uses the phrase "shitehawk." I love it! I hope to call someone a shitehawk someday. But anyway, I also wanted to throw in a military title. But none of the standards felt right.

Sheep are so amazing anyway. I'm surprised we haven't figured out how to make them pets. They love to be cuddled and will nuzzle you back. I used to raise them too, and they would bring their young to you, like as a trust thing. "This is my baby."

I did a little digging into this, and from what I can tell this is controversial. But it may be that cats are the earliest domesticated animal. But "domesticated" has a lot of work. Other sources say dogs. But most actually suggest sheep as being the first.

So why is purring better than a good roar. If you have a cat, you should know. Purring is intimate, and lets the cat better speak to its mother. If you own cats, well... you are their mother. They don't need to yell because we are intimate. If you're a lion, on expansive savannah... you need volume

Why do cats purr, but no lion can? And why do the latter roar, but my cat can't? An ossified hyoid bone in their throat. It rattles when they purr. It only happens in our housecats, and cheetahs. Cats whose hyoid is not fused and harden, can make roaring sounds (but also, they cannot purr.)

My sister's name is Pamela. And I love it, if only because it is a truly artificial name. Someone made it up. But it has roots in Greek "pan" meaning "all," and "mela" meaning "honey or sweetness." "Very sweet." Aww... unless you meet her. My sister is pure acid and fire. I love her for it.

Collie's bed is across the room from my bed, which is where both of us hang out. She does this blank-eyed stare at me a lot, and I did some research about it, and it's a common way for cats to show their comfort/trust/ease with you. They will often blink. And to show your affection back, blink.

Cats rank pretty high on the list of efficient predators. If you've ever had an outdoor cat the abundance of headless mice/moles dropped on your doorstep will attest to that. But still, they have been prey, and so hiding is an evolutionary trait. That's one reason they love small boxes...

I confess, one of my favorite things about owning a pet is saying the most filthy and abusive things to them, but in a pleasant tone of voice so they like it. "I'm going to cut you open and strangle you with your insides." And she just purrs away because I said it with honey in my mouth. 😄

TIL, one of the oldest settled cities in the United States is in Michigan, Sault Ste. Marie (founded 1688.) It's in the Upper Peninsula, quite far from me, but I have been there a few times.

I want to make more of these pictures. I don't know how well it looks on BlueSky, but it's a simple idea: start with an empty circle (trace a cup) and then make small shapes in a spiral. It's incredibly soothing. Ends up looking complex when it's really the most simple thing ever.

Noticed that since Collie has been here (my cat) I have been sleeping a lot better. I have had chronic insomnia for at least 30 years, and usually it takes a good amount of anti-histamines and cannabis to conk me out. I think it's because she's reduced my stress.

More pig videos! So when Mabel does her deep grunts, that's actually a sign of happiness. Pigs are not like many animals and humans, in that speaking in a high pitched voice conveys anxiety, fear, etc. Low grunts = happiness. Tip if you are ever lucky enough to meet a pig. Talk in death metal.

I have a thing for the smallest animals of their type. Like the smallest living bird, it is the bee hummingbird. Barely the size of the last digit of one of your fingers. The live exclusively in Cuba. During courting rituals they can beat their wings up to 200 times per second.
