Dimone Fleming’s story raises difficult questions about psychosis, motherhood, mental illness, race, and the law. The Black mother from the Bronx was accused of killing her two young sons, but in August 2026, a judge found her not responsible by reason of mental disease or defect after psychiatric evaluations determined she was experiencing severe psychosis at the time.
In November 2022, Fleming’s two sons, Daishawn Fleming, 3, and Octavius Canada, 11 months, were found dead inside their Bronx family shelter. Fleming was initially charged with murder and faced the possibility of a lengthy prison sentence.
But years later, the case took a major turn.
Psychiatrists for both the prosecution and defense concluded that Fleming was grossly psychotic and out of touch with reality when the deaths occurred. Reports described hallucinations, delusions and a belief that her actions were necessary to protect or “cleanse” her children.
The case also drew attention because it unfolded at the same time as the highly publicized Lindsay Clancy case involving postpartum psychosis. While the two cases involve different circumstances and legal proceedings, both have sparked wider conversations about maternal mental illness, postpartum psychosis, criminal responsibility and how the justice system handles mothers accused of killing their children.
