shimo @shimosnow.bsky.social · 25/06/2026like i thought i was going crazy thinking, "is this a touhou reference?" and i'd double check the japanese version and yep. 041

shimo @shimosnow.bsky.social · 10/02/2026there is no greater humiliation than someone noticing you shazaming a famous song in public 050
shimo @shimosnow.bsky.social · 01/01/2026oh i did use lemon juice and water! but the russet variety i used for the shiny typhlosion (golden russet i think?) browns so fast, i ended up dunking it in lemon water after every cut. i did the granny smith one first and that one holds up much better, is easier to carve, and tastes better imo 030
shimo @shimosnow.bsky.social · 25/10/2025i removed the peel from the red and yellow apple slices and cut flame shapes into em, then i cut a small slit into the back so i could stack the flames and insert em. if you then dunk it into cold water, the ears and fur tufts and flames will start curling up a bit if you cut them thin enough 060
shimo @shimosnow.bsky.social · 25/10/2025i then made the ears and fur tufts at the back using a similar technique to when you make bunny apples, cutting just beneath the peel towards the head (stem end), and then carved out the rest of the body using those as reference points. i ended up using a paring knife and a toothpick for this 170
shimo @shimosnow.bsky.social · 25/10/2025oh since some people asked me since there isn't a guide, i used granny smith and egremont russet apples for the main bodies, and gala and ambrosia for the flames. i cut em in eighths and put em in lemon water to stop browning. i then cut a piece off the blossom end so it could stand upright 191
shimo @shimosnow.bsky.social · 25/10/2025made some typhlosion apples for the first time honestly i don't think they look that bad but i could use some more practice 12799242

shimo @shimosnow.bsky.social · 28/05/2025and no, i have no clue why "guaiacol" was the first thing that popped into my head instead of something reasonable like "ice cream" or "extract" but in any case, i think it's amazing to think about what kind of stuff our minds are doing that we aren't consciously aware of 070
shimo @shimosnow.bsky.social · 28/05/2025then one by one, each step of my thought processes just kinda clicked in my head "it's a phenolic compound" "it's used for synthesizing stuff like vanillin" "wait... vanilla..." and i scrolled back up and noticed some post that used the word "vanilla" in it 160
shimo @shimosnow.bsky.social · 28/05/2025so i was mindlessly scrolling through my bsky feed and suddenly the word "guaiacol" popped into my head and wouldn't go away and i was very confused because i couldn't remember what it meant or why i thought of it 161

shimo @shimosnow.bsky.social · 22/01/2025so i decided i should just put stuff outside to let it freeze since it's colder outside than in my freezer, plus there's the wind for one, my door froze shut, and then i was too lazy to put on anything other than a t shirt and shorts to go outside 041
shimo @shimosnow.bsky.social · 16/01/2025also where i grew up, snow wasn't that common, so i really treasured it. there's this ephemeral beauty with frost and snow, seeing the frost on the grass glistening in the sun before melting away, or standing there in the snow and everything becomes silent. there's only you in this magical world. 040
shimo @shimosnow.bsky.social · 16/01/2025username explained comes from 霜雪 (frost and snow) because snow was special for me growing up, and also i like the 雨 (rain) radical on top of both then i took the native japanese pronunciation of 霜 (shimo) and mixed it with the english translation of 雪 (snow) so you get an s at the front of each part 181
