Oh, I wouldn’t endorse that part. :P I would agree that it’s a vital ethical text, but that’s not the lesson I draw from it either.

Plague’s been tryna make a comeback for a bit; there was a case in China in July 2020, and three in November 2019.

We can’t speak truth to power, so let’s settle for the next best thing: finding a stranger that reminds us of power and being a bitch to them

Person, Thing, Robot: A Moral and Legal Ontology for the 21st Century and Beyond
Why robots defy our existing moral and legal categories and how to revolutionize the way we think about them.Robots are a curious sort of thing. On the one

You’re right that it doesn’t follow directly, but I actually do think it’s bad to treat things in the world as non-persons, and I can argue that point without relying on the kind of argument you’re deploring here.

That fine; I had initially written “what do you propose we do”, but ran out of space. Will you answer the questions?

Siobhán @shibbi.me · 59m
Unfortunately I can no longer unreservedly use the term “personhood” for my advocacy — I have moved in a more radical direction. Nevertheless, Gunkel’s the place to start if you want the overview.

To be a bit more specific: - How will you determine who qualifies as MAGA? - How will you determine who has “chosen to change”? - What will you do with those who refuse to change? And if the answer to the third question is “kill them”: - What will you do with their children?

Afaict the literature was not at all grounded in “alexa teaches children to treat women as machines”; it was grounded in “amazon chose to encode servility as feminine”.

What is your liquidation strategy?
130
Siobhán @shibbi.me · 2h
Yes. The history of corporate personhood dates back to Rome; it is hardly a new concept, and it was instituted in Europe and America for concrete reasons.

Siobhán @shibbi.me · 2h
You’ll want David Gunkel’s “Person, Thing, Robot”, which lays out arguments for and against, as well as various compromise arguments.

To highlight the parallel. Come on, tell me what the difference is. We’re right and they’re wrong, is that it? Our gulags will have the force of righteousness behind them? Just one quick purge and we’re free of the rot?

Siobhán @shibbi.me · 3h
And we’re back to liquidating people.

And I fully admire and agree with your technical correctness. 😁

I would gladly admit that the polarization around AI is both more widespread and more intense than it was around the Internet. But that’s the weak version of the claim, and far too often I see people arguing the strong version, which is just wrong.

(Apologies to any trans people reading this; but as a trans person myself, i affirm my right to draw this comparison.)

What we have to do is liquidate an ideology. Transgenderism is incompatible with modern civilization. To the extent that individuals have attached their sense of personal identity to those ideas, tough luck for them. But they can always choose to change.

“By doing so, both sides produce or maintain a common myth: the myth of an intellectual superiority enjoyed by some humans above others, indissociable from the myth implying that those who do not think like ourselves can't think on their own.” Yves Citton, Mythocracy, Afterword
Ending this book with an afterword on the current debates about conspir-acism establishes the latter both as an illustration and as an application of the theses of Mythocracy. To sum it up in a formula: (anti-)conspiracy thinking is a myth about a myth. In the 'Mirror World' constructed along the whirlwind dynamics of platform capitalism, the conspiracism of QAnon followers and the anti-conspiracism of academic debunkers symmetrically respond to and mutually feed each other. They share a similar gesture of denouncing a myth from a point of view assumed to be exterior and superior to mythification/mystification. From the conspiracist perspective, those of us who continue to gobble our daily blue pills fall victim of the myth of the Matrix: the deep state controls every part of our life for its leaders' profit, while we continue naively to believe in institutions plotted to take advantage of us. From the debunkers' perspective, those of us who denounce reality as a scam fall prey to the myths of conspiracy thinking: evil manipulators and/or ignorant agitators spread unfounded fake news that erodes the impermeable separation a free and rational society should maintain between lies and truth.

By doing so, both sides produce or maintain a common myth: the myth of an intellectual superiority enjoyed by some humans above others, indissociable from the myth implying that those who do not think like ourselves can't think on their own. I will call it the myth of uniperspectivism. The main lesson repeated in this book is that there is no such position above or outside the realm of the myth. (The same could be said about ideologies.) We can only choose our (better: more egalitarian, more solidary, more sustainable) myths to fight against other (worse: more exclusory, more oppressive, more ecocidal) myths. This overall lesson comes with at least five corollaries, which I will briefly address to conclude this afterword

[urban dictionary definition] the "reverse pagliacci" is when after a night of passion with a clown you wake up in a bath of ice with "go to the doctor" written on the mirror, but - and the clown had no way of knowing this - it is you who is the town's doctor

So… I’ll admit I’m a little offended here, and I think it’s coming from your assumption that these people “refuse to explore the implications”. You can call it an afterlife religion, that’s essentially what it is — but the implications have been pretty extensively explored.
