The requirement for animal testing is not just cruel, it’s also unscientific.

Limitations of Animal Studies for Predicting Toxicity in Clinical Trials: Is it Time to Rethink Our Current Approach?
Animal testing is used in pharmaceutical and industrial research to predict human toxicity, and yet analysis suggests that animal models are poor predictors of drug safety in humans. The cost of anima...

It’s time to end our unlimited and unnecessary cruelty. What kind of world are we building based on the torture of helpless creatures?

Varun U. Shetty @shettyvu.bsky.social · 13/04/2025
Actually, less than 5% of animal models progress to human trials. There is little to no regulation on how animals are treated in these labs. And there is more and more evidence that these mammals feel pain and fear not very differently than us. Newer, cell based models test toxicity more directly.

Varun U. Shetty @shettyvu.bsky.social · 12/04/2025
This is a step in the right direction. We will have better days, more relevant to humans, and far less cruelty.

“These experiments can reveal toxic effects that could easily go undetected in animals, providing a more direct window into human responses.”

“Human-Based Lab Models: The FDA will promote the use of lab-grown human “organoids” and organ-on-a-chip systems that mimic human organs – such as liver, heart, and immune organs – to test drug safety.”

I hear your concern, but there have been true concerns about the translatability of animal trials to humans. Most animal trials don’t translate well to humans. There is very little oversight on how animals are treated in labs. These labs are often just torture centers for animals.

I try this when we’re up against the wall and have found success. I think its lusitropic action helps, especially in patients with reduced EF. One time my anesthesiologist attending dramatically improved BP in periintubation hypotension with just calcium chloride.

I really don’t use inhaled vasodilators for hypoxemia. I am not convinced it improves outcomes. I only use it for RV dysfunction. Also, if there is concurrent LV dysfunction then the question always is if we’ve diuresed enough.

From age 18 to 22, I volunteered twice a year in India's Pulse Polio Vaccination drive. We knocked on so many doors & convinced so many strangers. When India finally eradicated polio, I felt personal & collective pride. RFK Jr offends me in ways I can't even fully articulate!

“I hear the stars are sentient.” Read all three poems by K. Iver in @bostonreview.bsky.social www.bostonreview.net/articles/k-i... All three astounding. #everynightapoem #TransDayOfRemembrance
For Missy Who Never Got His New Name
I hear the stars are sentient. Which gives
me hope for the nitrogen feeding your grass.
Even more for the mole ending the day’s
burrow in your skull. I’m told your atoms
are still atoms. Somewhere you’re sitting
by a pool picking apart the physics
of swimming. In the hallway of a large
high school in Mississippi, you’ve resumed
the sophomore guarding my classroom
entrance with a letter, like an undiscovered
prince. I’ve resumed my surprise at desire
I thought was for cave dwellers.
This is where I go wrong. I loved
a body you didn’t. My younger self wants
the word to rebuild, rather than stop
at the blond hair, middle part, low ponytail,
the impressive manliness
with which your hips carried utility
denim. I tell my young self to flatten
her memory’s landscape. Picture two
scars liberating a torso. A first name
that doesn’t hiss. Soon, a Brooklyn
apartment. We pretend it finally
happened for you. It really did.

As Medsky grows it’s inevitable we see more users posting misinformation. Just my 2 cents, don’t give them the time of day. Don’t quote dunk, don’t screenshot, don’t let them take up the oxygen in this space. Just subscribe to the block list, report bad actors in DMs, and let the trolls starve.

Timothy Snyder summed up the LA Times and Washington Post situation elegantly.
Timothy Snyder from "On Tyranny".

Do not obey in advance. Most of the power of authoritarianism is freely given. In times like these, individuals think ahead about what a more repressive government will want, and then offer themselves without being asked. A citizen who adapts in this way is teaching power what it can do.

It doesn’t absolve us of our responsibility. If we believe in voting then we ought to believe in decreasing the demand for meat through our actions. Bringing down fossil fuel industry and not eating meat aren’t mutually exclusive. And there’s the animal cruelty aspect to it too.
