In the remote, mountainous regions of northern Vietnam, girls from ethnic minority groups struggle to access education. In Pakistan, young Kalash girls face similar challenges, where a lack of female teachers, scarce schools, and early marriage hinder their growth and learning.
The mountainous terrain of northern Vietnam makes access to schools difficult. Many villages are located far from the nearest primary or secondary school, often requiring children to walk several kilometers each way—sometimes over steep, muddy, or dangerous paths. During the rainy season, travel can become impossible. Because families worry about their daughters’ safety on these journeys, girls are often kept at home.Girls are often expected to marry early (sometimes in their mid-teens) and focus on domestic responsibilities rather than schooling. In some communities, education for girls is still seen as unnecessary or even inappropriate, reinforcing a cycle where women remain dependent and underrepresented in decision-making.The Kalash valleys are extremely remote, accessible only by winding, sometimes dangerous mountain roads that are often blocked during winter or after landslides. Many villages are hours away from the nearest school. Even where schools exist, they are few, small, and often under-resourced, lacking classrooms, sanitation, and proper teaching materials. For girls, long travel distances raise safety concerns, which discourages parents from sending them to school. Most schools in the region teach in Urdu or English, while the Kalash speak their own language (Kalasha-mun), which has traditionally been unwritten. This language gap makes it hard for young Kalash children to understand lessons, leading to poor performance and high dropout rates. Additionally, the national curriculum doesn’t reflect Kalash culture or traditions, which can make schooling feel alien and irrelevant to both students and parents.

I had the rare privilege of meeting and photographing the Living Goddess of Patan, Samita Bajracharya. Only eight years old, she was revered as the earthly embodiment of divine power within the sacred Kumari Ghar — a presence so potent that even a glimpse of her is believed to bring good fortune.
While in the ancient city of Kathmandu, I had the rare privilege of meeting — and photographing — the Living Goddess of Patan, Samita Bajracharya. Just eight years old, yet regarded as the earthly embodiment of divine power, she resides within the sacred confines of the Kumari Ghar, the “god-house,” where her every gesture carries spiritual weight. Each day, behind the intricately carved windows of that centuries-old sanctuary, the Living Goddess performs her rituals — serene, untouchable, and radiant with the quiet gravity of something far beyond childhood. To look upon her is said to bring good fortune; to stand before her is to feel time itself pause.Under normal circumstances, the reign of a Living Goddess ends with her first menstruation — the moment she sheds blood, she returns to mortal life, and the search for her successor begins. Some say even a single scratch can dissolve her divinity. Tradition warns it is unlucky to marry a former Kumari. The selection of a new Living Goddess is an intricate tantric ritual. Chosen from poor Sakya families, girls aged four to seven must meet thirty-two marks of perfection — from the shape of their eyes and teeth to the tone of their voice and the alignment of their stars. Then comes the true test: in a darkened room strewn with buffalo heads and filled with masked dancers and terrifying sounds, the candidates face their fear. Only the child who remains serene — untouched by terror — is deemed the true embodiment of the goddess. Finally, like the Dalai Lama, she must recognize items once worn by her predecessor, proving her divine continuity. The return to ordinary life is often the hardest chapter in a Kumari’s story. After years of worship and isolation, a former Living Goddess must learn to walk once more among mortals — no longer carried in ceremonial processions or served in silence. The world outside the Kumari Ghar can feel bewildering, even harsh.Tradition warns that any man who marries a former Kumari will die young, a superstition that lingers like a shadow over her future. Yet beneath the myth lies a more human truth — the challenge of reconciling divinity with normalcy. Having been treated as a goddess since childhood, obedience and humility do not come easily, nor does the prospect of being “ordinary.” For many, the fear is not of marrying a cursed woman, but of living with one who once ruled in silence, her every word — or absence of it — treated as sacred decree.

A small speedboat is positioned at the same level as a reef marker, hurrying into port before the sun sets. The sky above is painted in turquoise hues, with a golden glow surrounding the setting sun in the center. Dark gray clouds frame the sun and its radiant halo. In the distance, just below the sun, a small seaplane can be seen flying off into the sunset.

'Reflective Rest' A quiet moment bathed in urban luminescence. •Thomas Paine Park, NYC• Sparty #EastCoastKin #Photography #Art #PalacesAndGardens #Seating #ColorADay #YellowThu #Travel #Architecture #StreetPhotography #PhotographersofBluesky #UrbanGaze #HumansOfBlueSky #PhotoOfTheDay #SleepySep
This photograph captures a serene late evening scene within Thomas Paine Park in New York City, presenting a striking contrast between the intimate details of the park benches and the distant, vibrant cityscape.

The image is dominated by a row of classic wooden park benches, stretching diagonally from the lower left towards the center-right, creating a sense of depth and perspective. The benches feature dark, wrought-iron, frames with elegantly curved armrests and slats of warm-toned wood, worn smooth by time and use. The lighting, from nearby streetlamps and ambient city glow, highlights the textures of the wood and the subtle gleam on the metalwork, suggesting a peaceful, quiet atmosphere.

Beyond the benches, a paved pathway and open area of the park is visible, subtly illuminated. The scene evokes a sense of urban tranquility, with the benches inviting contemplation amidst the bustling city. A lone, blurry figure can be seen cycling in the distance, emphasising the relative solitude of the park setting at night, while also hinting at the continued life and activity around it.

The background is a soft-focus spectacle of urban luminescence. Numerous windows of tall buildings twinkle with warm, golden light, creating a dreamy, abstract pattern of bokeh against the dark silhouettes of the structures. These lights serve as a vibrant backdrop, grounding the peaceful park scene within the dynamic energy of New York City.

The overall lighting is low and atmospheric, contributing to a sense of calm and quiet reflection. The interplay of light and shadow on the benches, combined with the glowing city lights in the distance, establishes a contemplative and slightly melancholic mood, characteristic of an urban park after dusk.
