As Madison said, "ambition must be made to counteract ambition." What if the ambition is just to be on the team in charge?

Columbus Day became a Federal Holiday because of Italian American lobbying though. The story they tell within that Sopranos episode is true, but the point of the episode is "what does poor Italian immigrants have to do with you" in Tony's speech at the end of the episode.

That doesn't make sense at all. There are lots of positions, you can be second, or third, or fourth. Hell, you can even be fifth!

I mean this kindly: do we know yet that he is so effective? He's good at getting in your and my feed and we like what he's saying, but I at least don't live in Georgia. I hope the polling is on for him, but we need to see him outperform similar Dems to conclude that this is effective electorally.

I suspect like any number of Roman Senators who forgot their own family history of non-citizenship, Rubio would accept a sharply reduced "individualism" characterized by a non-majority of citizens living in a broader population with few of their rights.

Dark and Magical Places: The Neuroscience of Navigation

Read a book on navigation once where they told about a study that showed GPS users couldn't remember directions. Okay, no surprise. But then they made a "GPS" that gave directions by landmarks and unusual sights and it led to exact recall sometimes even on one trip.

OMG, do we have to do this? Everything the Army says they don't want is not waste and corruption if they get it. In fact, in this case, it's widely assumed the Army is encouraging AM General to go get these for them.

Still love my pet theory that they fed it into an LLM and asked for connections to Fanny Willis and it took basketball game, Atlanta Hawks, and Clark County from the show Atlanta and spit out the most hilarious Senate moment in years.

It's a mixed bag. Staff and Senators are in the clutches of the same information environment as all of us. With the Pentagon having broken off relations with Democratic offices, the trust deficit means that people will lean towards their inclinations. And their reward structure with their voters.

At a really fundamental level Leo XIV is just a person with sound, well-reasoned, moral stances on the world and how life should be lived who isn't afraid to say those things in public. That kind of person simply does not make sense to business leaders and politicians for whom speech is convenience.

You are very generous with believing so many are persuadable and not 1) engagement trolls, 2) actual witting or unwitting supporters of foreign adversaries, or 3) lonelies swept up in believing something. But then someone shows up and actually does want to think about things so who knows

the worst thing you can do is to base your values on what you think the public wants, the second-worst thing you can do is convince yourself that the public really shares your values and is being betrayed. People are simply not consistent enough or knowledgeable enough en masse to say this.

Sometimes it's as simple as the committees assign staffers a functional portfolio and they start thinking all functional. This was the case with both space and cyber, and we got space force, and they still want cyber force.

I think the biggest damage has been to the immunity the U.S. military picked up from the general public from 2001-2024 of being perceived as impartial and reliably professional. A LOT of normie Dems I knew were afraid of pushing things to politicize the military (e.g., backing Durbin cig ban at px)

This was Strange New Worlds through two seasons and then it took a hard turn into fan service, call backs, and interpersonal relationships. That's either because that's what audiences watch these days, or what studios think they watch, or what fascist-appeasing suits at Paramount thinks helps

Funniest part to me is Jack Smith using 110% of his lawyer brain. He avoids making the connection himself; he doesn't even say "Hawkeyes," he just says "Iowa." He knows it's better to let everyone figure it out on their own. He also knows from Klobuchar's grin that she'll dunk it for him.

Grassley is a huge Caitlin Clark fan and you can see how smart Jack Smith is when he refuses to correct "Hawkeyes" but keeps mentioning the unfriendly chair's favorite player while everyone else puts together the pieces.

Unfortunately, there's no causal link in this article independent of a guy trying to cut a plea deal and has lied about tons of things. The article unveils two major scandals: cutting the anti-corruption unit and how much political fundraising is a scam, but chases something not substantiated.
