The hope is to someday draw characters from my own stories, but that will be a while down the road, I’m sure. In the meantime, I’m having fun learning new skills. The main take-home so far: Full body shots are tough!

I recently blasted through all 42 volumes of the Berserk manga, and Miura’s art inspired me to pick up drawing after a 20 year hiatus. I’ve been drawing from reference using some of his panels, focusing on character art. I’m working my way through the early volumes, hence all the pics of Guts.

It all started on this day. Thank you for a wonderful twenty years.
Text in the center reads: 20 Years Oct. 2006 - Oct. 2026, clarkesworldmagazine.com

(right) Cover art for issue 241 by Marcel Deneuve is "Labyrinths of Azarax" and features a blue and white mechanical eye in a circular opening looking at a small, white, glowing humanoid figure standing on a large pipe in the tunnel. Many pipes line the walls, all heading out to the main room. Pipes are yellow and gray. Room beyond is blue.

(left) Cover art for issue 1 by Tomasz Pietrzyk is "The Town of the Towers" and features a surreal town of yellowy white distorted towers with reddish orange roofs that overhang the towers and rise to a point. Mishapen dark windows and doors are scattered about on the buildings. Orange sky gives the entire piece a warm tone.

My first book fair (Klischee Buchmesse) as an author is done, and after selling out of all my books (except book 2 in my Bit trilogy), I would count it as a success!

I’m not sure how it will go since the book fair is in Darmstadt, Germany and geared towards the German fiction market, whereas I only write in English, but it’ll be a fun little experiment!

This time next week (Sat Sept. 12) I’ll be attending my first book fair, Klischee, as an author and will be at table 251.

For those who have read these, do my groupings match yours? For those who haven’t, you might use this as a guide for when to read each. Did I mention the stories are interconnected but can mostly be read in any order?

I grouped all my Alfom stories into the four seasons based not on any particular requirement. Sometimes, the tone or atmosphere just matches. Other times, the story is literally set in that season. In still other cases, the themes are most consistent with what each season tends to represent.

As a new author, it’s very difficult even in the best of times getting one’s name out there. Being published in Clarkesworld has helped me immensely in that respect. Consider supporting the good work they do by subscribing. Every bit makes a difference!

Clarkesworld has recently discovered that their August issue successfully breached containment and gained access to the Internet, where it is presently hacking reader's minds. "Oh no, what will we do? Who knew that stories could be so powerful?" said Neil Clarke, when approached for comment.

My take on the relative difficulty of writing time periods in SF (from least to most difficult): super far future -> far future -> present day -> near future Near future and especially books that include the downfall of society on page are tough to nail. Why then do I keep writing these stories?

All that to say, this writing game really is a series of peaks and troughs, highs and lows. The main difference between a published and unpublished writer is the former has learned to ride those waves.

I’m back home after an awesome time at @metropolconbrln with some added baggage in the form of copies of Clarkesworld, specifically the issues my 3 stories appear in. These were gifted by Neil Clarke himself making for a lovely surprise. I shamelessly asked him for signatures on all of them.

I mean BitR is meant as a standalone, and it still confuses a lot of people so I can’t imagine jumping in with BitL 😅 But yes I’m happy to offer one approach to reading the series. That being said, I love the idea of people reading them in a completely different order much like you did!

With an impending release, it’s time to update the author-suggested reading order for my Alfom series. At present, these stories can be read in any order with one caveat—the Bit trilogy (yellow borders) ought to be read in the order indicated unless you like spoilers and being thoroughly confused.
