Drawn To Rope, May 2026 - Rory and Pixie A lot of two person poses. Twice as much to draw, and making everything match up where the bodies meet and intersect, making sure both are in proportion to one another! I let the green trousers set the tone for the colour palette this time 😁 (1/3)

The wooden post was the first bit I painted and is one of the bits I'm most pleased with. This one also caused me to think about how this works and whether she would have a reflection in the wood panelling - I decided she would (since I'd already given shadows to other figures)

Drawn To Rope, March 2026 (1/3) @anatomiestudio.bsky.social @inkylayla.bsky.social Margo & Pretzel Colours a bit more muted here than my usual but loved playing around with making the hair do wild flowy things, remembered to bring the straw so I can blow the paint around a bit!

Another colour scheme, I really love this one. Also the first time I've done one of these on smooth board rather than canvas - gives a different feel for laying down the colours but makes easier work of the thin lines. With thanks once again to model Hester posing for @drawonline.bsky.social 💜💛💙

I spent quite a while on this style in the past few months, trying to bring a splash of colour to the gloomy winter days. This is model Hester posing for @drawonline.bsky.social - I loved having all the fingers and toes in this pose! This is the first in a set of three, more are coming.

It takes forever to do the white lines in oil paints. I've tried to use acrylics but the colour precision and coverage of oils keeps winning. (The background is acrylic though). Getting better at using the tiny brushes and more recently using silicone colour shapers to keep everything in place.

I probably shouldn't have picked a reference with quite so many trees but at least it equalised things a bit and let me spend a decent amount of time painting the figure. I maybe also should have gone for a smoother surface... but I'm happy with it and love the fabric detail especially.

For the previous ones like this I was spending an hour or two drawing the figure and then a long time painting everything else. Which is kind of the opposite of what I like to focus on. So I decided to flip the concept... Maybe this time humans are landing in an illustrated world.

Comments I've had about this style include comparisons to A-ha's Take On Me video (possibly my subconscious inspiration in the first place!) and a recommendation to watch the movie Pleasantville (which I did and may inspire future paintings...)
