I'm at the Norwegian Development Conference at Sydney. Counting how many times I want to yell "Bullshit!" at an AI-related claim. Ten minutes into the keynote, I'm at three.

"safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz will be possible via coordination with Iran’s Armed Forces and with due consideration of technical limitations.” Weasle words if I've ever heard them.

One surreal thing about the war is that Bibi, Trump, and Khamenei are all completely untrustworthy. I feel like there's a source material I don't get to read, and all I have access to is three competing fanfics - each written by writers who don't fucking understand that this is a tragedy.

When I get to the end of a non-fiction book I feel the need to post it on social media. Just finished reading 'The Selfish Gene' by @rdawkins.bsky.social I would describe it as a number of thought experiments regarding evolution. It was a fascinating journey.

Finished my online renewal of a Microsoft Certification. Here are the assessment results. "Implement containerized solutions" appears three times, "Implement Secure Azure Solutions" twice, and there's a section titled "Troubleshoot solutions by using" Did they vibecode this?

I am "Stephen King" years old, which tells you nothing since he published in 1974 and hasn't taken a break. (I am also "David Eddings", and "Douglas Adams" years old.)

So I think: "I wonder what twitter is like now?" I go there, and the first thing I see is Elon Musk posting body-shaming tweets. Stupid me.

My prediction: Ahmed al Ahmed will spend a few days being hailed as a hero. Then, someone will uncover something that demonstrates he has human flaws. And the media will turn on him. Just to keep the clicks going. I hope I'm wrong and this guy is boring enough to get left alone.

I spent 15 minutes writing a bug report to Microsoft. Pressed "Post your question", and instantly got a message saying it was deleted for violating the code of conduct. Their large language model decided it was bad. No recourse. Unbelievable.

Where does that figure come from? At my workplace, the proportion of code written by AI has not significantly increased over the last six months. (Last May it was sitting at around 0%. Current proportion: 0%)

I'm not religious, but I know many church-going people who get a lot out of their faith, and enjoy being a member of their church community. We acknowledge that we see the world differently, but don't discuss it any further because there's no reason to. Happily, I do not share your experience.

Where's the Shovelware? Why AI Coding Claims Don't Add Up
78% of developers claim AI makes them more productive. 14% say it's a 10x improvement. So where's the flood of new software? Turns out those productivity claims are bullshit.

"Now that we can deliver working software that would have taken months in mere days or even hours..." is the 2025 equivalent of "Now that we've established that UFOs are alien spacecraft..." No. That really hasn't been established. Anything you say after that is building on smoke.

There is nothing wrong with a woman fighting for justice. That's what Linda Reynolds did. As to evidence, I will admit I haven't read the 360 page judgement, but it does identity 26 statements by Higgins during media interviews that contained claims that were objectively false or misleading.

As long as you're not substituting prayer for things which DO actually work. (like vaccines and sensible gun control laws).

True, when we do something there is often a disconnect about what we tell ourselves the reason is, and the actual reason we're doing the thing. This doesn't necessarily make the actual reason less valid.

Andrew Shepherd @shepherdsworld.bsky.social · 24/07/2025
It depends what your success criteria is. Praying gives you a sense of humility and also makes you accept that there are problems you have no control over. That's helpful in itself.

There's no straight answer as to what it costs, because it is now based on how much you use it. I'm not a customer. As you are a professional user of the product, I would be interested to know in a month's time what your actual spend is.
