We also get into Elaine’s completely wild life and career, how she became one of the major historical romance cover artists of the 1970s–90s, and what Laura is doing now with this huge archive of original paintings. podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/e...

Elaine Gignilliat’s romance covers are lush, dramatic, and incredibly sexy. In the latest episode, Elaine’s daughter Laura Sawyer shares how her mother created these covers, the research and craft behind them, and the very specific kind of sensuality she was trying to capture. #romancelandia

Scholarly types! The call for papers for the next @iaspr.bsky.social conference is now open. It'll be in Oviedo, Spain in June 2027 and the theme is Choosing Love, centring around hope and optimism in a world which often does not engender especially hopeful or optimistic feelings about the future.

What does it take to stay relevant in romance for nearly five decades? In Episode 175, Jayne Ann Krentz talks about the risks and reinventions that shaped her career, why the alpha hero never disappeared, how romance changes with culture, and why popular fiction matters in unstable times.

I’m talking about HEAs, genre literacy, reader expectations, the history of romance publishing, and why romance readers react so strongly when outsiders treat decades of genre development like a punchline.
it’s sort of comical how you think your opinion exempts you from genre conventions when, in fact, the book you’re calling predictable was handed to you by a genre that spent decades honing preferences and teaching readers and writers exactly what a love story has to do before it gets to call itself a romance novel.

HEA discourse again? Groundbreaking. Every few months, someone discovers that romance novels end happily and mistakes genre convention for creative failure. Just because you don’t understand the system doesn’t mean the system is shallow. #romancebks shelflovepodcast.substack.com/p/hea-discou...

Sought, Surrender, and the Alien Erotics of Inevitability The question is not “is this fantasy good?” The question is: what emotional need is this fantasy solving? Dame Jodie Slaughter is here to discuss Sought by Evangeline Anderson. #romancebks Listen on your favorite podcast app!

Willard E. Hawkins approached the pulp romance genre as a n00b (and ultimately very clinically), but to his credit, he nevertheless Gets It. (From THE AUTHOR & JOURNALIST, February 1943. Coming soon to a blog near you!)
It is necessary to anticipate our findings somewhat by making the following point: Analysis will show that the real appeal of the love-pulp does not lie in the plot, or even in the problem underlying the plot. The elements of the problem are, of course, necessary in order to give form and structure to the narrative; but they are merely incidental to the real purpose. This purpose is to provide the emotional thrills of romantic love.

I actually know what bergamot smells like but I don’t think I could discern it in a mix of other scents! I understand smelling like horse and/or tobacco but I don’t find that a particular pleasant association…

I have never noticed a consistent PLEASANT smell about a person (or nailed down the components of it, eg “lemon & bergamot”). I know this is used in romance as a signifier, but also: Am I the olfactory challenged or is it romance physiology? #romancelandia

"The problem is when these lists [of 'firsts'] stop functioning as entry points and start functioning as endpoint. […] The archive flattens and the genre's past starts to look cleaner, more linear, and more settled than it actually is."

Questions - do you remember anything about the cover? Color, photo vs painting? How sexy was it? Assuming contemporary… if it’s farcical and funny that doesn’t actually have that many possibilities.

Yeah, I think this cover is for the audience of people who mostly read bestsellers and have less genre preference or genre fluency/competence (not derogatory). They don’t want a book that looks like a romance novel.

I love (/s) that the intro is like, “What compels someone to own 2,000 romance novels?” and it felt extremely targeted and rude. Beautiful books! I’d like to ask the author of this piece if his interest in interviewing people represents a yearning for interesting things to happen in his own life?
