Asked Marc Skinner about opportunities to fill vacant spaces in the #MUWomen matchday squad with youngsters, and why that might not be possible. “What we always do, and I can assure you here, is that when it’s available, we have three or four players up every training session…”
I think in these moments, what our balance is, if there’s no game that they can go and play in, so for example, they clash on the same day or the day after. I think it’s looking at the welfare of the individual, if they’re fine to travel, because what you don’t want to do is bring them in the squad, they warm up, they have the experience of the game but actually maybe not get on, and then they’ve done that physical load, and the day after, they play again (for the U21s) and they might play 90 minutes, and you don’t want injuries from that for them as well. I think it’s about balance. What we always do, and I can assure you here, is that when it’s available, we have three or four players up every training session when available; when they’ve not got college work or they haven’t got games, then our door is open. We have, as…I say, three or four, and we welcome new players in all the time to come and experience what it’s like. You’d be surprised that once you’ve been on the bench a couple of times, sometimes if you know that the seniors are going to play, it’s probably not an experience, when you can go and play yourself (for the younger team). It’s literally just about understanding the human, nothing more than that. If there’s a space and we think that they’re going to play, then they’ll be put on the bench ready to come into games or start. There’s not just that we don’t put them in, there’s a lot of thought process; we’re constantly in conversation with AJ (academy manager, Amanda Goodwin) every week, and Milly (U21s head coach, Melissa Brown), about which players deserve it, which don’t. In fact, more than ever, with the size of our squad, we’ve integrated that a lot more.”
