Chris Cenac is an unusual prospect. He's big, but he doesn't always play like that. I dive into Cenac's style of play at Link Academy, potential role at Houston and strong tools that provide room for scalability sheedinatl.substack.com/p/chris-cena...

Houston's Cenac is 6'10", but too often plays smaller than that. Should he relish a scaled down role instead?

i've kept an eye on FIBA U18 Eurobasket overall it feels like it could be a weaker bunch than the 2024 U18's which produced four 1st round NBA draft picks this summer, but still some really interesting prospects to look out for sheedinatl.substack.com/p/u18-euroba...

the New Orleans Pelicans paid a lot to trade up and get Derik Queen at 13. But they still have Zion Williamson and Yves Missi. And they also signed Kevon Looney what is Queen's role in this ill-fitting ensemble? I examine his struggle playing with Missi sheedinatl.substack.com/p/i-have-no-...

my main questions with Queen: - can he be a functional player on a team that’s not built to cater to his specific skillset? - if he struggles anchoring the defense, does he produce enough offensive value to justify keeping him on the floor? - can he become a more efficient passer long term?
000 0
Sheed on the Hawks @sheedinatl.bsky.social · 18/04/2025
Queen is not very quick laterally, so his defensive transition may be hampered by stuggles defending the better spaced, larger NBA courts
100 1
Sheed on the Hawks @sheedinatl.bsky.social · 18/04/2025
he lacks the size and body balance to stand up to bigger guys in the post. Per Synergy, Queen is just 47th percentile in post-up defense efficiency
100 1
Sheed on the Hawks @sheedinatl.bsky.social · 18/04/2025
.. some his best moments blocking shots on defense are indeed closer to what i would see in a wing defender prospect as he's good protecting the basket from the weak side
100 1
Sheed on the Hawks @sheedinatl.bsky.social · 18/04/2025
..his box DBPM stats are dragged down by the fact that Queen has a below average 3.8% BLK rate, which is more of a good wing defender level metric, rather than of a defensive anchor at the center position...
100 1
Sheed on the Hawks @sheedinatl.bsky.social · 18/04/2025
defense is a two edged sword for Queen. He grades out as a pretty good defender in terms of advanced metrics measuring overall defensive impact: 3.7 DBPM, which is good for 22nd among all underclassmen last season, and 3.02 DBPM (second on his team behind Julian Reese) and 2.27 in box DBPM...
100 1
Sheed on the Hawks @sheedinatl.bsky.social · 18/04/2025
...Queen is a more of a finesse offensive rebounder who uses his spatial awareness and anticipation to get himself in positions to tip the ball in
100 1
Sheed on the Hawks @sheedinatl.bsky.social · 18/04/2025
Queen is an above average rebounder not just on defense, but on the offensive glass as well. As an off rebounder, he’s not someone in the mold of Mitchell Robinson, ala a player who gets offensive rebounds by using his physicality to outmuscle opponents on the glass....
100 1
Sheed on the Hawks @sheedinatl.bsky.social · 18/04/2025
also, Queen has a tendency to misread passing angles, like here on these pretty sloppy high low plays
100 1
Sheed on the Hawks @sheedinatl.bsky.social · 18/04/2025
Queen has a high center of gravity and while driving has a tendency to show a bit too much of the ball which makes him succeptible to having the ball swiped out of his hands. Also, as good as his handle and footwork are, he doesn’t necessarily have the strongest grip on the ball going to the basket
100 1
Sheed on the Hawks @sheedinatl.bsky.social · 18/04/2025
...for example, other playmaking bigs in this class like Collin Murray-Boyles had better stats (21.1% AST and 1 A/TO) and Thomas Sorber (15.6% AST on 1.1 A/TO) had better numbers, so you kind of have to wonder if the ‘baby Jokic’ comps are legit for Queen
100 1
Sheed on the Hawks @sheedinatl.bsky.social · 18/04/2025
despite that, Queen, for a player that’s being sold as a playmaking big, he logged a pretty mid assist rate of just 11.6% on 26.9% usage and 16.5% turnover rate, good for just 0.8 assist to turnover ratio...
100 1
Sheed on the Hawks @sheedinatl.bsky.social · 18/04/2025
his rebounding and handle combo unlocks an awesome, rare + trait for a big - Queen can really bring the ball up the floor, i just love how calm, composed and controlled Queen is in those situations.

Sheed on the Hawks @sheedinatl.bsky.social · 18/04/2025
... throwing skip passes from the post, mixing in an odd outlet pass because he’s a dominant defensive rebounder at 24.5% DREB rate

Sheed on the Hawks @sheedinatl.bsky.social · 18/04/2025
Queen’s offensive versatility, passing and decision making allow him to function as a playmaking hub from the center position, operating primarily at the top of the key. He’s shown flashes of multi-layered playmaking...

Sheed on the Hawks @sheedinatl.bsky.social · 18/04/2025
Queen’s post footwork is a work of art almost. He’s just so good at getting his player to commit to one side and quickly spinning to the other, does it with exceptional ease and fluidity
100 1
Sheed on the Hawks @sheedinatl.bsky.social · 18/04/2025
Queen is a supremely skilled big whose handle, downhill driving ability and footwork make him a real mismatch for most bigs. Queen has shown he can take on players 1 on 1. His bag is full of tricks - he’s shown some awesome decel, euro flashes, size up and spin moves, live dribble passing ability
100 1

...in off the catch or dribble drive situations

Sheed on the Hawks @sheedinatl.bsky.social · 18/04/2025
one of the ways Maryland had success using Queen on offense in half-court which i think is very translatableis him trailing the play where Queen can effectively drive and move the ball. Despite being a poor shooter, Queen is highly skilled and can be used on the perimeter...
100 1
Sheed on the Hawks @sheedinatl.bsky.social · 18/04/2025
a quick look at Queen's offensive shot generation profile suggests that he's a versatile offensive center, not overly reliant on post-ups or rim rolls
100 1
Sheed on the Hawks @sheedinatl.bsky.social · 18/04/2025
at 6-10, Queen is on the shorter side as a center. He has quite an unorthodox build with bulky upper body and long legs. Though a freshman, Queen already turns 21 in December, so he's a full two years older than, for example, Cooper Flagg or Noa Essengue
102 2
Sheed on the Hawks @sheedinatl.bsky.social · 18/04/2025
Derik Queen, let's do a season review thread👇🧵 the Maryland center finished the season with a BPM of 7.9, good for 8th among all D1 freshmen. Queen's season had some memorable moments, including a game winning drive in a Round of 32 game against Colorado State

my main questions with CMB: - can his offense translate to the NBA without an effective 3 point shot? - can he ever develop one? - will CMB's lack of straight line burst be a bigger nuisance defending on a better spaced NBA floor?
010 1
Sheed on the Hawks @sheedinatl.bsky.social · 15/04/2025
one of the areas where he could improve on defense is guarding in space and on closeouts. CMB lacks the straight line speed to be effective on longer closeouts, which leads to either lax or overly commited closeouts
100 1
Sheed on the Hawks @sheedinatl.bsky.social · 15/04/2025
he has such a fantastic sense of how the play is going to develop. On this clip, A&M clear out the side for a slip, but CMB quickly senses the danger and slides to protect the rim, instead of going with his man who was on a dummy run to the corner, designed to take CMB's rim protection away
100 1
Sheed on the Hawks @sheedinatl.bsky.social · 15/04/2025
for his height, CMB is an awesome shotblocker. He's rumoured to have a 7ft+ wingspan. Murray-Boyles is not the greatest vertical leaper, but at the same time i don't think he gets enough credit for that particular aspect of his game
100 1
Sheed on the Hawks @sheedinatl.bsky.social · 15/04/2025
i wanted to emphasize this particular play because it gets more and more ridiculous the more you watch it. Look at Murray-Boyles' hands, they suck up the ball like a vacuum cleaner on that loose ball situation
100 1
Sheed on the Hawks @sheedinatl.bsky.social · 15/04/2025
Murray-Boyles is a wrecking ball on defense. He has next-level awareness, is a very engaged defender with fantastic defensive footwork and magnetic hands that he uses to just rip balls from his opponents. He finished the season with a 2.9% STL rate, which is very good for a mostly interior defender
100 1
Sheed on the Hawks @sheedinatl.bsky.social · 15/04/2025
side or area of the floor. CMB's combo threat of driving and passing out of the short roll makes him a tough guard in these situations
100 1
Sheed on the Hawks @sheedinatl.bsky.social · 15/04/2025
i think his screening/short roll passing ability is one of the ways how you can mitigate spacing concerns despite him not having a 3 pt shot, CMB is a high gravity player in other areas of the game. Using him as a roll man can bring two defenders to the ball and make the defense gravitate to one...
110 1
Sheed on the Hawks @sheedinatl.bsky.social · 15/04/2025
despite that, CMB's handle has ways to go. As good as he's been at playmaking, his turnovers are on the high-ish side, and the assist-to-turnover ratio stands at just 1 CMB is way less confident going to his weak hand and his handle is not at the level where he could operate in very tight spaces
100 1
Sheed on the Hawks @sheedinatl.bsky.social · 15/04/2025
this year CMB showed increasing willingness to bring the ball up the floor. He's getting much more comfortable with his handle, and that confidence has unlocked new layers of offensive productivity for CMB
