Haha, I just remembered my first coding job I found on a board at my tech school. I called and they said sorry we need perl experience. I said I'd call back in a week. Did nothing but perl for a week, called back, got the job. Never used perl once at that job, ended up doing PHP.

Have we mentioned cgi-bin? One of my first websites was hosted on angelfire and then geocities was all the rage. That was back when "under construction" was all over the place. Of course this was after I saw some amazing stuff done with rip graphics on bbss, it took a bit for the web to catch up.

There's the front end which is a mess for reasons. When it comes to the back end though you can really see the difference between something like Elixir that is well suited for server software versus something like python, PHP, ruby, or java which aren't well suited for it but are commonly used.

Let me know if you have a better conceptual model than this. I definitely do not "dark factory" my software and take ownership of the implementation. I just want it to reason more like I do so it has fewer "misses".

The rule Before changing an existing system, design the affected slice from first principles as if greenfield, then reconcile it with the code that exists. The greenfield pass is not academic — it is how you find the one place the cheap path would have been a bolt-on.

Dark factories are a silly way for software to be built with the current level of technology that we have. The cumulated waste is just going to keep adding up. Further.. nobody wants to install slop apps. Yes develop things faster. But also develop higher level conceptualization and skill faster.

I notice that there's almost no attention paid to the emotional experience of work. For example, the emotional roller coaster of dealing with promotion cases or maybe the emotional experience of proposing something and it being rejected. Just as examples.

I'm open to it. But I've noticed that they tend to have high cpu utilization and crash a disproportionate amount of the time compared to other platforms.
