When I was in school I asked my professors if I could complete all assignments in an open source only Linux environment. Learning how and what tools to use between GRASS, SAGA, QGIS, etc forced me to learn the concept, not push button get fruit. Doing that actually opened my career path that ESRI

Anyone running local AI for actual operational tasks? I'm working on a river ice detection method using gemma4:e4b through Ollama to classify presence of river ice using USGS HIVIS webcams. It's taking a bit of effort to get it >90% accuracy, but there's definitely some meat to this.

Some folks will get out the pitch forks for any LLM use. But I'm old enough to remember when people would get out the pitchforks when random forest came out. But, most people tread slowly and then understood the good aspects. The loud ones became left behind in their fields.

This is a nuanced use case. Especially if it's a user-prompt only feature. It allows you to fix common stupid things (I use swipe and the number of times I've sent "work" instead of "with" is insane). It preserves the transparency of the post, AI isn't creating anything, simply offering a diff.

My favorite realization of being a bit of a data nerd is that while I try to maximize efficiency, my road trip planning now focuses on non-interstate highways. It "costs" me additional time, but the food, interesting sights, and local stores pays for it in spades.

In my snow hydrology work when we create period of record or climatological normals, we tend to place a threshold for snow presence to avoid big bullseyes with infrequent ephemeral snowfall events. Beautiful maps!

I have an anecdote. Because there is a great loss of efficiency above 70mph in my EV6, I tend to road trip on US and State highways vs Interstates. Road tripping has become fun again. Interesting sites, unique restaurants, and less stress. It takes longer, but I'm more relaxed and ready in the end.

In the 90s few Indians or Brazilians had in home phone, fewer had internet.Cellular phones democratized that gap.So, adopting renewables is expected; less capital requirement, same outcome.The graphic is a nice example of what that looks like.
