I've gotten a lot of requests from faculty about how to talk to their students about the Cornell 7. I'll post a few resources I've built over the years that I've heard are the most helpful:

✨📖 I WROTE A BOOK! 📖✨ Care of the Sexual Self” came out a couple weeks ago published by Bloomsbury. it’s for anyone curious about the philosophy of sex, sex education, and the policies that shape it. But at its heart, it’s about how we become who we are sexually.

Most of my previous research investigated what philosopher Michel Foucault called “Care of the Self.” Here, I go further into what Foucault means about the sexual self (if there is such a thing) and talk about how the self has been constructed through power structures.

Fellow academics: have you ever promoted your book actively once it was published? Meaning, did you reach out to bookstores to see if they would host you for a promotion?

If you want to understand why so much of the Epstein coverage feels so weirdly icky and bad faith, this article gets at the main dynamic I’m seeing. The takeaway is that men use allegations of rape as a domination contest. Yelling “rapist” doesn’t always translate into care for survivors.

In light of today’s conversation on academic accommodations, I’m going to revive a thread lost to time when I deleted my Twitter profile. It’s about a bunch of academic accommodations that instructors can offer in lieu of an extension on an assignment. 🧵

Something I hear a lot in my neighborhood is that there’s a way for everyone to help. And it’s true. We all have a role to play in resisting ICE and fascism. If you want to help the people of Minnesota, this website has vetted ways to do that:

The success of ICE watch interfering with ICE’s mission is almost certainly why DHS keeps sending more agents to Minneapolis. They used to execute their raids with just a few agents. Now they need 6-12 to even begin to disrupt the social pressure to be nonviolent.

It’s becoming increasingly clear that the best thing a parent can do for their son is to enroll him in co-ed activities and facilitate friendships with girls from the youngest age possible. Patriarchy hurts boys. And nothing runs counter to patriarchy like teaching boys to genuinely value girls.

There seems to be a whole group of men who believe they will have more sex under fascism. But let me clear something up for you. Fascism doesn’t promise more sex. It promises more rape. If that’s the path you’re taking to get sexual access to women, then you’re on the path of becoming a rapist.

Columbia University has handed over its undergraduate admissions process to Donald Trump and his MAGA allies, who will now decide at their sole discretion whether the university has admitted enough white people. It's no longer an independent institution.

I can’t stop thinking about how the Access Hollywood tape came out before the election even happened, yet suddenly we have people concerned that the President might have lied about being a sexual predator who were totally fine with it when he told the truth about being a sexual predator very grim

I wish more Epstein files coverage was focused on the cover up. Because we already know Trump is a rapist. We have known for years. The real story is in his power to protect himself and other abusive men.

Is compersion an innate orientation—or something we learn? 🤔 Can something be both innate and developed? Maybe compersion—like desire—is an orientation we grow into. Full post on Substack: shaundmiller.substack.com

📖Just wrapped up the research of compersion by @drmariethouin Did you know there are actually TWO distinct types of compersion? One is like an attitude, an ethical foundation even when the feelings aren’t there, while the other is like the joyous feeling and physical sensation of endorphin rush.

Martin Luther King Jr. is well-known for fighting for Civil Rights, bus boycotts, the “I Have a Dream” speech, and non-violent protest. But in his later life, he extended his philosophy toward global justice and interconnected his criticism of poverty to the problem of fighting in Vietnam.

WHO comments on United States announcement of intent to withdraw

The World Health Organization regrets the announcement that the United States of America intends to withdraw from the Organization.
WHO plays a crucial role in protecting the health and security of the world’s people, including Americans, by addressing the root causes of disease, building stronger health systems, and detecting, preventing and responding to health emergencies, including disease outbreaks, often in dangerous places where others cannot go.

The United States was a founding member of WHO in 1948 and has participated in shaping and governing WHO’s work ever since, alongside 193 other Member States, including through its active participation in the World Health Assembly and Executive Board. For over seven decades, WHO and the USA have saved countless lives and protected Americans and all people from health threats. Together, we ended smallpox, and together we have brought polio to the brink of eradication. American institutions have contributed to and benefited from membership in WHO.

With the participation of the United States and other Member States, WHO has over the past 7 years implemented the largest set of reforms in its history, to transform our accountability, cost-effectiveness, and impact in countries. This work continues.

We hope the United States will reconsider and we look forward to engaging in constructive dialogue to maintain the partnership between the USA and WHO, for the benefit of the health and well-being of millions of people around the globe.

What are some good scholarly journals that would be interested in doing a book review on the philosophy of sex education? It would also touch upon moral philosophy, gender studies, public policy, public health, and psychology.

We often hear we need more empathy, but what is it exactly? It’s a multifarious answer. So I looked at it from various psychological and philosophical descriptions into a coherent post. I would’ve loved to add more elements such as descriptions from Carl Rogers, but perhaps that’s for another post.

Riding on the NY subway and I saw drawing meticulously making sure that each pencil drawing was in its particular line. Looks really good but seriously, how did you manage that with all the bumps, abrupt starts and stops, and the sharp turns?
