If we'd always had wildlife on our banknotes and someone proposed putting historical figures on instead we'd be having the exact same discourse from them in reverse. It's just so tedious

Some people's benefits will be cut and they won't be able to offset this by no longer spending on alcohol if they never bought alcohol before. The spending restrictions seem to be a smokescreen to disguise benefit cuts

Sharon @sharonm72.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
But where is the evidence that people receiving the benefit are currently spending it on, say, gambling? If they aren't currently spending on the things that will be prohibited it will just be a cut

Sharon @sharonm72.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
The estimated savings come from a benefit cut, whether or not the recipient has ever bought cigarettes or alcohol - it's not an estimate of the amount people on benefits spend on these things

The article says the police were asked to stop investigating, but doesn't say who by - presumably by the suspect or his family - as if the police should stop investigating because the suspect doesn't like it

If you were to go back in time to the beginning of the universe and rearrange a deck of cards into a new permutation every second, the universe itself would come to an end before you were a billionth of a way to one of those arrangements repeating itself.

Increase the speed limit to 80mph and actually enforce it with limiters - I think that might get support?
200
Sharon @sharonm72.bsky.social · 25/08/2026
Not an analogy. You're legally allowed to get drunk, you're not legally allowed to drive above 70mph. Limiters would just enforce an existing law, not change what you can currently do

The questions are written so that if everyone answered correctly and promptly they would all get the same score (I have been a mastermind contestant, this is part of the rules you have to read and sign before filming)

People seem to think that Londoners aren't real people, they think we don't have friendships and communities and extended families, they think we're all transient and rootless and don't care where we live, that Manchester is authentic and London is a fraud

4-6 close protection officers for basic level 24/7 security apparently, so you could be looking at a 50% increase on your assumptions

Apologies, I thought the question was most enjoyed rather than best - people can enjoy books for reasons beyond quality of writing - I can see your point. But I do think the fact that lists are published might influence decisions
100
Sharon @sharonm72.bsky.social · 16/05/2026
You're assuming they won't like books like that but maybe that's because you don't like books like that and you can't imagine anyone you admire doing so - but by saying this, you're demonstrating why people might not include them in public lists

Sharon @sharonm72.bsky.social · 16/05/2026
You've picked very well regarded genre fiction writers there, but what if they wanted to include Dan Brown or Catherine Cookson - you think they wouldn't think twice?

Plus Starmer's wife is Jewish, they observe Jewish customs, Starmer doesn't invoke this as much as Polanski but it's clear that there can be different views on anti-Semitism within the Jewish community

This is true in Bucks, not true of all grammars, some of which admit purely on score
