Con staff talk to each other. Cons share staff. If you're an ahole at one con, other cons will hear about it. When you're applying to run panels or join staff, people consider whether bringing you on also means bringing drama. So don't be an asshole. It's a very effective networking strategy.

This is not a one-and-done instance. With Pepper Coyote, these kinds of things happen constantly. When there's someone he doesn't like or has rightfully called him out on his actions, he has gone down this route. He'll harass, he'll lie about you, he will make stuff up to undermine you.

I was harassed and stalked by Pepper Coyote at Anthrocon. Sunday night, I was by the waterfront hanging with some friends. Pepper then came to our group and started verbally harassing me. (Audio is more important, did not want to point my phone directly at him, but he does pop up eventually)
