I am very much Not into sports, but even I know that the Hawks and the Hawkeyes are different teams, based on the simple fact that they are two different words :)

Westlaw is making itself harder to search in because they want you to use their genAI tools to do everything. HeinOnline is adding new search operators based on user feedback. Be like HeinOnline.

I am applying logic to an illogical situation, but wouldn't it make more sense to just...donate a billion dollars? Or start a non-profit or something? Why are people secretly fighting, possibly to the death, in Antarctica to become philanthropists???

My hometown is in Southern IL. The high school mascot is the Midgets. The only entertainment in SoIL is high school football, and lord help you if you suggest your literal slur of a mascot is offensive. Also Centralia is the Orphans. I vaguely remember some other town being pretzels or pickles(?)

Another day, another database pushing genAI down my throat while simultaneously making itself harder to use. (I know you can click on the menu to get to the links and can set shortcuts further down, but I shouldn't have to do either of those things.)

They filmed a scene of Chicago Fire a block away from my house and I had to walk through the crew setup area to get to the bus. Once I saw a bunch of vintage-looking cop cars around the Loop, and it took me WAY too long to notice they all said "Gotham PD" on the side

Illinois Institute of Technology cuts 160 faculty and staff just before fall semester

The Illinois Institute of Technology has laid off approximately 160 faculty and staff just before the start of the fall semester, a university spokesperson said in a written statement.

According to an email shared with WBEZ, the university’s president said Illinois Tech is facing research funding cuts and “severe restrictions on international students.”

“The university has no choice but to pursue targeted reductions to address these challenges and protect our mission as an opportunity engine for all,” Illinois Tech President Raj Echambadi wrote in an email to employees on Tuesday.

Illinois Tech, which has its main campus in Bronzeville and a law center downtown, is not the only university with these struggles. The Trump administration has significantly cut federal funding for university research and tightened regulations on foreign students.

The changes have discouraged and even disallowed international students from coming to the United States, which is hurting college finances. Foreign students typically pay higher tuition than domestic students.

The university reported that more than 40% of students were from countries outside the U.S. in fall 2025. Six in 10 graduate students at the school were foreign.

Enrollment data posted on archives of Illinois Tech's website show a loss of approximately 1,200 international graduate students between the fall of 2024 and 2025 — a significant decline for a school that enrolled 7,500 students overall last year.

An Illinois Tech spokesperson did not detail how many faculty and staff have been laid off in each department. But several educators at the school said the cuts were deep and compounded by months of attrition following rumors of financial instability.

The university spokesperson said leaders recognize the changes “have a significant impact” on laid-off employees and are “committed to providing impacted colleagues with severance.”

“As always, we will continue to place students at the center of all that we do and to ensure educational excellence at Illinois Tech,” the spokesperson wrote in an email.

The university’s faculty senate issued a vote of no confidence in the president and provost on Monday, the day before faculty and staff began receiving layoff notices. In a letter to the university’s attorney shared with WBEZ, senate members acknowledged the campus is facing “extreme” financial difficulties but criticized how senior officials have handled them.

“The faculty do not trust the current senior administration to make the necessary decisions to navigate this transition in a way that meets our responsibilities to students and accreditors,” wrote Daniel Bliss, political science professor and faculty senate chair. “The current senior administration’s slow, opaque, apparently uninformed and non-transparent addressing of the crisis has deepened and aggravated its scope.”

Multiple employees said campus leadership have yet to communicate with students about the layoffs. The fall semester starts for much of the campus on Aug. 17.

“Students are concerned that we're going to be closed in two years, three years,” said one staffer who asked to remain anonymous because they fear retaliation from university administration. “They're worried they're not going to get the courses that they need because we don't have the faculty to teach them.”

Lisa Kurian Philip covers higher education for WBEZ, in partnership with Open Campus.

I graduated high school in 2012. There was an implication that because I was "only" good at humanities stuff, I was therefore actually not smart at all. People who were good at math and science but not good at humanities stuff were seen as inherently smarter, even though it should've evened out imo.

It’s not about drugs. If it was, Trump wouldn’t have pardoned one of the largest narco traffickers in the world last month. It’s about oil and regime change. And they need a trial now to pretend that it isn’t. Especially to distract from his sinking under Epstein and skyrocketing healthcare costs.

This is very weird to me. Disney is notoriously stingy with its copyrights, so handing its characters over to the Plagiarism Machine That Also Makes Porn is...a choice. It seems like they want to use it as a way to get free content out of fans, but I'm not sure they thought this through??

I'm only on page 11. This really stuck out to me. They're probably flat-out lying in their reports and are absolutely viewing all protests as riots, but asking ChatGPT to create a report for them probably didn't help!
Screenshot of a footnote in a court order. Footnote reads "The Court also notes that, in at least one instance, an agent asked ChatGPT to compile a narrative for a report based off of a brief sentence about an encounter and several images. Axon_Body_4_Video_202510-03_0949_D01A2556T at 00:00–00:42. To the extent that agents use ChatGPT to create their use of force reports, this further undermines their credibility and may explain the inaccuracy of these reports when viewed in light of the BWC footage."

Post from Ald. Bennett Lawson which reads "Please be aware that our office has received reports of of an ICE sighting and two people detained at the intersection of Belmont and Broadway this morning.
Please see more information on the report below, as well as our Immigration Rights and Resources page with hotlines to call if you see ICE or see someone detained, legal resources, and more."
