Prof Sundari Anitha did not come to play #ECDV2025 This is a searing critique of the misuse of “intersectionality” in DFV policy and research
Slide reads: An intersectional analytical lens has been crucial in understanding the ways in which precarity is constructed and exploited in TMA, and to understand the specificities of this violence at the (inter)national level as well as at the meso and micro levels;
• However, intersectionality has often come to be deployed to understand difference from the 'mainstream' (where the mainstream refers to the invisible norm - white, heteronormative spaces and relationships);
For eg., in Australia and in some Nordic countries, we can see this in the focus on forced marriage and HBV where framing of and responses to particular forms of VAWG reinforce the notion of difference (focusing on family and community structures) whilst eliding state-structured power asymmetries (see Vasil et al. 2025 on Australia);
• Beyond the limited conceptualisations of VAWG that this approach elicits, the policy and practice solutions it yields exclude the voices and experience of the victim-survivors whilst reinforcing some axis of inequalities they face in the name of addressing others (coloniality and racialised bordering regimes as a response to VAWG).

I’ve spent this week in hospital (the occasional reality of living with chronic illness). For the first time I’ve tried to get staff to gender me correctly and would like to share the most effective strategy I’ve come up with: getting my 7yo to decorate signs above my bed with rainbows 🌈
Handwritten signs in A4 paper above a hospital bed say “Hi, I’m Shannon. I’m trans and genderqueer. My pronouns are they/them (not she/her or he/him). e.g “I’ve done Shannon’s obs but they haven’t taken their medications yet” more: www.TransHub/pronouns. The signs are decorated with childish texta drawings of rainbows, stars and flowers

Open up this app for the first time in over a year and see the awful news that Prof Gemma Carey has died. Re-upping my review of her wonderful memoir from a few years ago, because it’s a book that deserves readers www.goodreads.com/review/show/...

Shannon's review of No Matter Our Wreckage
5/5: What I love about Gemma Carey’s writing is the beautiful, devastating way that she makes the personal political and this memoir does not disappoint. She explicitly avoids gratuitous details of se...

I have a referral letter to a pain clinic! It genders me correctly the whole way through! … and now it needs to be either faxed or posted to the clinic for me to get an appointment. This is 100% never going to happen.

Important arguments here, that I think also have a lot of relevance for not-for-profits. We operate in a weird space, between mandated data collection from funders and data that serves our own organisational motives.

If you’ve been thinking about a PhD and have an interest in queer parenting, this is a phenomenal opportunity. Our research centres are a great place to study, and Rainbow Families are a wonderful org to be partnering with www.unsw.edu.au/news/2023/10...

Today, I stand in solidarity with Palestinians as our government endorses Netanyahu's war crimes and annihilation of Palestinian civilians. Palestinians are an occupied people trapped in an open-air prison with no food, water, electricity, fuel, medicine, or anywhere to go.

Australians will label Palestinian resistance “terrorism” and then vote no when Indigenous people here politely ask for a voice in parliament. Solidarity with liberation struggles everywhere. Justice and treaty now ✊🏻

This research methodology from BOSCAR frustratingly reduces coercive control to “incidents” once again. Police record assaults, but for people experiencing abuse, coercive control is all-pervasive and never goes away www.theguardian.com/australia-ne...

So many people talk about the challenges of raising neurodivergent kids, and no shade, but there’s also some pretty big upsides. Like we’ve got away with packing our kid the exact same lunch every day for nearly a year, and she’s still totally happy with it.
