My run of Halloween horrors kicks off with an insane asylum adventure in which no one is what they seem… unless they seem crazy cause, yeah, they’re all crazy. Patrick McGoohan? Amanda Plummer? Some British guy who’d rather be doing Shakespeare? (No, seriously, he’s in Branagh’s HENRY V.) Let’s go.

It’s Jim Henson’s 90th birthday! I chose to mark the occasion by watching a pair of his early experiments in filmmaking: the Oscar-nominated surreal dream TIME PIECE and the existential nightmare THE CUBE. See what an anxious, fretful Henson looked like years before Boober Fraggle.

For the first time ever, I made bagels. Boiled ‘em and everything. And they’re actually pretty tasty. L’shana tovah, everyone.
Bagels! Homemade, on a cooling rack.

Claire Denis’ particular gift is dispensing with narrative, jettisoning linear time, erasing the reliability of character, and making you love her for all of it. The intruder is coming from inside the chest cavity, and L’INTRUS is coming at you from all directions.

If you’re going to build a film around a hero who is a sentient placenta, you had best not miss your opportunity to be weird. Through extreme earnestness, this film hits the target squarely.

We all know that the mind of a teenager is a twisty labyrinth with wildly changing climates, random side passages, and complete unpredictability. But what if you could see that for yourself? I give you the movie that puts the whole messy landscape on display.

Raise a stein to the Czech filmmakers back in 1967 who realized that the most potent nuclear apocalypse isn’t the one with all the death and destruction. It’s the one where all basic humanity has been stripped away. Seek out apocalyptic fantasies elsewhere.

This is the superhero movie Marvel doesn’t have the guts to make. And with good reason, because it’s crazy, operatic, and over-the-top, with every character coming out worse for the journey. You think the next Avengers movie is gonna be like that?

It’s a pair of shorts from the Queue de la Weird. One is about cruelty to children, one is about cruelty to human-sized chickens. Strangely, one is more affecting than the other. Think you can guess which? Hint: they both feature eating bugs.

Well, whaddaya know. If it isn’t Rip Torn, sexual dynamo. Come watch the first film to combine the pseudo-documentary genre and found footage with the death of the sexual revolution. See you in Kip’s Bay!

If you wanted to showcase the music of your favorite chanteuse — Grace Chang, for example — you could do a lot worse than making her songs the soundtrack to your sad elegy about the slow-motion collapse of society due to environmental catastrophe and a pandemic that turns people into roaches.

Hey, remember that time Newsboys made a movie? Ok, I’ll back up. Remember Newsboys? Hmm, alright… are you familiar with the genre contemporary Christian music? Great, well, imagine one of those bands decides the time is right for a vaguely surreal romp through a circus, and you get this.

With documentaries, the weird factor is often not measured in the moviemaking as much as it is in the subject of the movie. So it goes with this one, following a monomaniac who shields his nuttiness behind scholarship. For the Einstein fan, it might be a disappointment.

The economically disadvantaged being plied with sex and drink to distract them from their condition? Mental illness exploited? Smacked down every time they try to better themselves? Yeah, that’s so 1971. You certainly wouldn’t see anything like that today, right? Shuji Terayama would like a word.

“What’s your favorite idea? Mine is being creative!” I’m delighted to write about this hilarious horror show that is definitely not for kids, even if the aesthetic is more kid-friendly than some shows actually aimed at children. Web shorts and full-length episodes alike are fun and terrifying.

Me and the Coen boys have a real hit-and-miss history. However, this one worked for me. With what may be their final collaboration; Joel & Ethan have revealed the Old West for the mix of spectacular beauty and rueful kismet that it is.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: anyone who manages to cobble together a script and a cast, who captures those words on film or video, and edits them into a complete feature has accomplished something remarkable. By this standard, DAYMAKER is a huge achievement. And I’ll stop there.

You have to hand it to the curators of this house of horrors: they manage to combine more that 20 different artistic styles and animation techniques into a unified whole purely by virtue of an unrelenting tempo and an embrace of shock value. It certainly never wavers.

Well, that last-second screening of Elio isn't gonna happen, so I think we can bring down the curtain on this year's Oscar nominee binge. And it was a pretty good haul, with 7 Best Picture nominees, and at least one film viewed in every category but one. Here's the breakdown:

“Young Sherlock” was an absolutely pleasant binge. Real cotton candy, brain-free entertainment. Perfectly cromulent. But my god, this show features some of the most spectacular costuming I’ve ever seen. Just stunning work on the clothes front.

Let’s give for it up for the one cop out there defunding himself. Harvey Keitel finds new ways to bottom out in the film that Abel Ferrera seems to have made with the express intention of angering the Vatican, even though it’s about as vigorous a defense of the mystery of faith as you’ll ever find.

Holy smokes, I completely forgot to share my review of the light-hearted retro-apocalypse TURBO KID. If you’re the kind of person who wishes the 80s never left, thinks what every Mad Max film is missing is a perky ingenue, and wants more Michael Ironside featured roles, then I’ve got just the flick.

You have to admire a cinematic adaptation of a literary classic that admits up front, “Can’t do it. Maybe we can do SOME of it.” So it goes with PASSAGES FROM JAMES JOYCE’S FINNEGAN’S WAKE, which looks at an absurdist, nonsensical melange of language and decides to just do some of that. Slainte.

Honored once again to give a film its due in the Weird Movie Pantheon. If Richard Kelly ever gets around to finishing this confusing epic, it’s not like it’s going to get any less strange in the process. But let’s also hear it for the stars who committed to act in this thing, logic be damned.
