“Why are steam catapults so big?” It takes a fuck ton of force to accelerate something like an F/A-18. That means 36,000 kilograms, going from 0-165 mph in under 2 seconds. The fastest cars in the world do 0-60 in like 3 seconds. Those weigh like 2,000 kg. The force is hard to comprehend.

When you’re building an aircraft carrier, the most essential system is the launch mechanism. Steam catapults have been used for a long time. (I’m excluding VTOL aircraft from this conversation.) Stream catapults are fucking HUGE.
