It's a small thing, but I ran into Jim O'Callaghan around lunchtime on Thursday mooching his way down towards Church street, alone and in the rain. My surprise meant that l held back from telling him how disappointed I am in him and his courting of the racists (along with much else).

How Do I Tell if an Area is Loyalist or Republican?

Loyalist areas, just watch out for Union and Ulster flags. Orange and Crimson banners are ours as well. Kerbstones painted Red White and Blue are another sign. Unfortunately, you’ll occasionally see Israeli flags too. That doesn’t mean people are actual Zionists, they only put them up because the left-wing Republicans fly Palestinian ones! Republican areas have tricolours, although nothing like on the scale of our flag displays.

Look, I know there is a lot wrong with this paragraph (from the empty prose, to the mispelling of names, the bad grammar, the historical inaccuracies, and beyond), but also, the evidence that is contemporary to Cleopatra is that she wasn't hot hot. Her wit and charm was what made her attractive.
Roman bust of Cleopatra

From the Enclopedia Brittanica:
Cleopatra VII in Marble: The ‘Berlin Cleopatra,' c. 50–38 BCE
A marble portrait bust of Cleopatra VII (c. 50–38 BCE), known as the “Berlin Cleopatra,” third quarter of the 1st century BCE. In the collection of the Altes Museum, Berlin. The queen is depicted wearing a low diadem; her face is framed by ringlets, with the remainder of her hair carved in segmented “melon” ridges and gathered into a bun. The almond-shaped eyes, prominent nose, and softly modulated features have been praised for reflecting Cleopatra's renowned intelligence and allure.Cleopatra VII

If you've an actual interest in Irish history that goes beyond the memes, see the below. Marriage was about property, breeding, and the obligations to pay for the rearing of children. There was plenty of cause for divorce, but it wasn't faultless - it was difficult for a woman without cause.
Sorry, it's six pages of footnoted commentary from Fergus Kelly's "A guide to early Irish law" DIAS, 1988 - I'm not able to type it all out.

Highly recommend this book though, I've had to steal it back of three family members who have stolen it from me

It's been going since it started (in 2009) the post below is from 2015. Kevin Finnegan from Castlecoote house is the organiser. More fool the punters who turn up to be the other side at this event, it's always centered on the right wingers (John Waters had a good run there for a few years too).
Text from 2015 post at https://corkandabout.blogspot.com/2015/05/house-of-light-castlecoote-in-roscommon.html

The [Percy French] Festival, established by Kevin, has taken place annually in Castlecoote since 2009. Kevin’s father was involved in the Percy French festivals of 1957 and 1958. The festival is about the music of French but over the years has played on his name to focus on a particular subject and examine aspects of Irish life in detail.

The title for next July’s festival is Through a French Mirror. “Mirror, mirror on the wall. Now I see warts and all”. Over three days (8th-10th), life will be examined by a list of speakers that includes: Robert Ballagh, Lucinda Creighton, Professor William Reville, Kevin McStay, Dr Olga Cox Cameron, Dr Síle de Cléir, Bishop Kevin Doran, and Adelle Hughes. Musicians performing are Jon Henderson, The Mulligan Sisters and Johnny Duhan. Information and tickets here.

How do you protect people who are on the far side of 'Peace lines' like this? The reason why these fortifications are in place is because the 'Catholics' who live there were burnt out of their homes in 1968. And the people living there don't want them gone: www.irishtimes.com/ireland/2025...

The Troubles, which began in 1968, started with the protests of the Housing Action Committees who were resisting the slums they were being forced to live in and the lack of schools for their children. They kept with the civil rights marching and protesting until they were being killed by the cops
From the Cain site https://cain.ulster.ac.uk/issues/violence/majinc.htm#1

They already do come after the Catholics. This is why the borders between Loyalist and Nationalist areas look like in Belfast. Loyalists don't have 'Catholic' neighbours because they'd already have terrorised them out. But property is cheap in these areas so poorer people move in there.
Interface zone between the Loyalist Shankill Road area and the Nationalist Falls Road (with some added Zionist propaganda because this is the Loyalist/Protestant side)
