If I didn’t know anything about modern American politics, I would think that a former White House Press Secretary would have the best chance of coming out of a Chotiner interview alive. But instead, Jean-Pierre has maybe the worst interview that I’ve ever read.

Laser cutting is a great way to make cuts with thin lines that FDM 3D printing definitely isn’t the best at! But I’ve actually gotten good results 3D printing thicker areas that then transfer the texture of the top layer.
A print made with an FDM 3D printed letterpress cut of railroad tracks, where the surface texture of the print looks kinda like wood.

So this is apparently a thing that exists, but unfortunately their events page is completely broken so it's a little difficult to figure out which coffee shops to boycott.
Generic-looking logo for "National Coffee with a Cop Day." Super lazy design work - there's two badges on this thing lol.

Pretty gross! NYT characterizes the murder of civilians as part of an “uneven track record” and immediately parrots that the killings were “justified.”
NYT article: “Uneven Track Record
The aborted SEAL mission prompted a series of military reviews during Mr.
Trump's first term. They found that the killing of civilians was justified under the rules of engagement, and that the mission was undone by a collision of unfortunate occurrences that could not have been foreseen or avoided. The findings were classified.”

People credulously reposting this kind of shit really annoy me. AI has some worrying social externalities that we should probably address! But even if you don’t know anything at all, you understand that *5* cars is not that many cars.
Text of a presumed news article making the rounds: “Recently, a study was conducted by researchers at the University of Massachusetts to determine how much energy is used to train certain popular large AI models. According to the results, training can produce about 626,000 pounds of carbon dioxide, or the equivalent of around 300 round-trip flights between New York and San Francisco - nearly 5 times the lifetime emissions of the average car.”

Sign the petition to prevent Western Illinois University from getting rid of all their academic librarians and also maybe chastise this fucking guy. savewiulibrarians.org
THE CHRONICLE OF HIGHER EDUCATION
"Lora Ebert Wallace, a [WIU] professor of sociology, said she is
baffled by the administration's decision to cut the librarians...If there are no librarians around to stay on top of things, she said, it's just a matter of time before those systems start failing... Library advocates argue that librarians provide essential support for that expertise and those programs. But the provost's office viewed librarians through another lens." WIU Interim Associate Provost Christopher Pynes spoke with the Chronicle. ‘“We're trying to Moneyball this thing and try to figure out how to get as much as we can, and as many offerings as we can, with the least amount of money,’ Pynes said, referring to the Michael Lewis book about a baseball team."

I really like this chart too, but if we're talking about Biden's policies, it's probably useful to note that the US's contribution to these numbers remains pretty modest.

(From UCWUVA tweet about UVA Faculty Senate) Some professors are the exact same as cops, except that they'll make a land acknowledgment before tear gassing students.
United Campus Workers UVA tweet: "[Faculty] Senators seemed worried that just anyone can walk into commencement. One senator said people would not feel unsafe if snipers were on the roof, but UVA should notify people if they will be there, so people present at May 4th don't get 'emotionally triggered'"
