A friend shared this photo from outside an NIH building this morning. The signs refer to four former NIAID staff members who were recently forced out. 2 are retiring and 2 have been reassigned to the National Institute of Minority Health and Health Disparities. A travesty and 🙏 for their service.

After a 6 week review we are officially cancelling 83% of the programs at USAID.
The 5200 contracts that are now cancelled spent tens of billions of dollars in ways that did not serve, (and in some cases even harmed), the core national interests of the United States.
In consultation with Congress, we intend for the remaining 18% of programs we are keeping (approximately 1000) to now be administered more effectively under the State Department.
Thank you to DOGE and our hardworking staff who worked very long hours to achieve this overdue and historic reform.

My family had certainly been traumatized. My spouse narrowly escaped firing at USAID only because they had a new (Fed) job lined up, but is still at great risk. Despite a decade and a half serving the US people in biomedical research, my job is also at risk. We don't deserve this.
