Teaching a friend how to paint minis. The black and white sketch took me nearly no time, less than an hour. The interesting bit: the upper half of the kimono is diluted paint. The sash and bottom half is transparent paint. Guess which I’ll use more for these kinds of paint jobs? Paint in alt text.

One could easily use non-transparent paints to provide highlights and specular lights if desired. (And I will!)

I like seeing the palettes of others, so I’m posting my own.

A palette of coated paper with a variety of skin tones mixed on it in oil paints. Colors are all Winsor and Newton oil paints: Indian red, alizarin crimson, Winsor yellow, Winsor blue, titanium white, ivory black, and burnt umber.

Two pieces of plastic with six pairs of squares (two pairs of yellow ochre and Indian red, two pairs of Winsor yellow and Indian red, a pair of alizarin crimson and Winsor yellow, and a pair of alizarin crimson and yellow ochre) blended together. There is a square of violet with a gradient of a desaturated green on it. There is a rectangle of Indian red with Winsor yellow blended, and two rectangles of yellow ochre with Winsor yellow blended. There is also violet mixed with progressively greater concentrations of Winsor yellow and white, which ended up a washed out desaturated green.

Took a fabulous class on skin and #NMM with Mikhal Pisarski. We all ran out of time to paint the leather, hair, eyes, and some details. I didn’t deeply understand until about 75% of the way through and tried to refine/adjust but ran out of time. I will repaint this bust to cement what I learned.

I sketched him out with an airbrush. In the final version, the blade is hand painted with black and white and some blue. As can be seen, the runes are a fluorescent green and should seem to be glowing.
