The competition is open to anyone with a scholarly interest in the history of alchemy or chemistry who, by 2025, has not reached 35 years of age, or if older is currently enrolled in a degree programme or has been awarded a master’s degree or PhD within the previous three years.

The Partington Prize, established by the Society in memory of Professor James Riddick Partington, the Society’s first Chairman, is awarded every three years for an original and unpublished essay on any aspect of the history of alchemy or chemistry. The prize consists of five hundred pounds (£500)

Research Awards of up to £1000 are open to post-graduate students, those who obtained a PhD since 1 January 2015, and independent scholars. Subject Development Awards of up to £1000 may be made to support scholarly outreach activities in either history of chemistry or history of alchemy.
