I often found that using RPG Maker was one of the only ways that someone who works a full time job could complete something in a reasonable amount of time. VIbercoders might make the same argument. But theres a difference between using a template and vibecoding. You can study a template and learn.

Looking back, I mourned a lot that coding was the hardest part of making a game. I knew the concepts, but never learned much beyond the eventing in RPG Maker, and a bit of Ruby/JS. You'd think I'd have turned to vibecoding by now, right? I'm the target demographic for AI! Nah.

I don't know how much fight I have left in me for it all. I've even been just meeting it at "ok, well, at what capacity can I tolerate it" in some cases (using Bluesky, for instance, an openly-vibecoded website).

Video games are rad because there are more great games than anyone could ever finish, yet there will still be a guy with a tattoo of Vector the Crocodile who does nothing but grind thousands of hours of Sonic Heroes speedruns. And deep down, you know that guy is a realer one than you will ever be.

It might just be a format of game that's hard to go back to. I grew up and loved all the early Harvest Moon games and I just don't have the attention span for most of them now.

So it's kind of jarring, especially when dungeon crawlers are a genre known for resource management and taking risks. Resetting fights until the RNG likes me almost feels intentional. Not sure if I like that!

There's a lot of convenience: being able to save anywhere and return to town for a full heal whenever, etc. But then there's other systems like the level cap that work in tandem with those in awkward ways. When put together, I just sit there resetting boss fights until the dice fall the right way.

Four hours in, I'd say it's like a poor man's etrian odyssey. It's pretty alright for what it is, but It does skirt the line between approachable and toothless, where it can be a bit too forgiving to make any of the challenges feel meaningful.

I sorta dont like that "Support this indie game or this studio will die horribly" has become a leading angle that we're trying to sell people on now. I know it's a symptom of how dire the games industry is, but I feel like i'm never hearing about any given game's merits lately.
