What drives variations in diurnal air temperature range? How does it respond to clouds? Does it carry signals of surface evaporative stress? What happens to DTR as the planet warms? Our new paper in @agu.org addresses these questions. @akleidon.bsky.social @kaighin.bsky.social

New Paper: Clouds obscure the link between extreme rainfall and rising temperatures
Rainfall events are expected to intensify everywhere because warmer air can hold more moisture. However, testing this relationship with observations across warmer regions and periods sometimes seem…

Clouds affect the link between extreme rainfall and rising temperatures by cooling the surface. Adjusting for this reveals that extreme rainfall aligns with climate model projections in warmer regions. doi.org/g8wdvd

Clouds obscure link between extreme rainfall and rising temperatures
Extreme rainfall is usually defined as the heaviest 5% of rain events in a specific area. As global air temperatures rise, scientists expect extreme rainfall to increase.

Our new paper is out in #nature_communications. We show that observed variations in extreme precipitation-temperature sensitivities across continents can be explained by differences in cloud radiative effects. Read more here: www.nature.com/articles/s41....
