I've ridden two odd-car trains today, and on those, it was the northernmost car missing. That's a very small sample size; I'll keep gathering data, but wanted to know if there's an actual answer.

On #SFBART trains with an odd number of cars (5, 7, or 9), which car is missing, relative to the next larger train? 1. The one in front 2. The one in back 3. The northernmost 4. The southernmost 5. Other, but predictable 6. Random or unpredictable 🚇🚇🚇🚇🚇

I'm really excited to share the story of Temporal all the way from TC39 to the Chrome implementation powered by Rust!

We need a conversation on AI coding etiquette. First thing: should we treat agentic code differently than human code? I hear a lot of people saying: Your code is your code whether or not you use AI and you need to stand behind it. I don't fully agree. I want to know when code is human vs LLM.

If someone uses AI in their work, it's basically impossible to ever truly call it their own. What's key is disclosure, which sets expectations.

So many things wrong here; where do I start? - Market was 1%, then jumped to 10% in the hours before Trump's announcement - Polymarket ruled it a "permanent peace deal" despite not being permanent and not being an actual deal - Nearly $500M volume This is what I don't trade on prediction markets.

Shane Carr @sffc.bsky.social · 26/06/2026
I believe in the principle of crowd-sourced data, but the "US x Iran Permanent Peace Deal by June 15" market saps what little faith I had in Polymarket to deliver on that promise. This is corruption in plain sight.

We started the Diplomat Rust FFI project as a way to scale ICU4X (a Rust library) to many target languages. Since then, multiple other clients have discovered Diplomat, and through the magic of open source, we have new targets including Kotlin and Python. You should consider using Diplomat, too!

In the meantime, the 38R is too slow. It should have one purpose only: get people more quickly from the Richmond District to Market Street. It makes too many stops. It should go basically non-stop from Stockton to Divisadero. With just one stop at Van Ness due to multi-agency transit connections.

Distance: 6.7 miles, pretty much due west. It shouldn't take 1hr to go that distance in a major city, especially in a straight line! A similar distance is Google New York to Harlem, which takes 26 minutes.

I considered going to the Thursday night bash at the Legion of Honor museum tonight. Google Maps said, 1hr away from downtown, then 1hr back to go to Oakland. I wasn't going to spend 2hrs in transit. The lack of a Geary Subway causes real economic losses. #SFMUNI #SFBART 🚇

An S-bahn finally came. It's hot and completely full; we left behind at least a hundred passengers at Flughafen and dozens more at intermediate stops.

Sprinters from Schiphol to Amsterdam are every 5-10 min; in Zurich, 12 times per hour. Why so few in Frankfurt?

Shane Carr @sffc.bsky.social · 30/05/2026
I was about to write a post praising Deutchebahn for a pleasant journey from Amsterdam to Frankfurt... but the train terminated at Flughafen instead of Hauptbanhof, and now I'm on the platform with thousands of other frustrated passengers waiting for 30 minutes for the S-bahn that keeps not coming

(6) SNCF TER. One of these was pleasant, but my worst experience was Basel-Strausbourg which was overbooked, no elbow room, no level boarding. (7) DB ICE (Germany). Last place! Always late, always overbooked. Note: some Spanish trains are even worse than DB but I didn't go to Spain this month.

(3) SBB InterRegion. Less crowded than the IC with most of the same upsides. (4) BeLux InterCity (Luxembourg and Belgium). Nice train sets, but small trains, so super super crowded. (5) SNCF TGV (France). The best trains, but always fully booked days in advance.

Shane Carr @sffc.bsky.social · 17/05/2026
I've taken 16 trains in 5 countries while traveling through Europe this month. My ranking: (1) NS InterCity (Netherlands). Lots of seats, quiet, clean, level boarding, punctual. (My anecdotal experience!) (2) SBB InterCity (Switzerland). Quiet, punctual, clean, more crowded but enough seats. 🧵

Shane Carr @sffc.bsky.social · 05/05/2026
If these trains operated more frequently and with more empty seats, delays would be less problematic, because you can arrive at the station and simply take the next train. But, popular routes like Frankfurt-Zurich operate only once/hour (less if you avoid connections) and are standing room only.

Shane Carr @sffc.bsky.social · 05/05/2026
I was looking at DB's stats which report 60% punctuality for long distance trains vs 90% punctuality for regional trains. zbir.deutschebahn.com/2024/en/inte...

Yesterday I rode Frankfurt to Zurich. The fastest ICE is 4h via Basel. But with delays and missed connections, it took 5h 30m. Alternatively, I could have taken regional trains via Stuttgart, scheduled for 6h, but if they are more reliable and less crowded, I may have picked that option.
000
Shane Carr @sffc.bsky.social · 03/05/2026
The German ICE trains are consistently late, standing room only (even in 1st class), expensive, and not really that fast. The RE trains seem to be more on time, less crowded, inexpensive, and not really that slow. Is the stress of ICE trains worth the few minutes it sometimes saves? 🚄

The Clipper reader is broken on this bus but there's a fare inspector onboard giving people trouble because everyone is riding without paying. 🤷 #SFMUNI #transit

It's a regular occurrence for a car, taxi, or even another bus to be blocking a bus stop and obstructing the view. Is it the responsibility of the passenger to proactively monitor the traffic and flag down the bus 😳, or for the bus driver to honk and alert the passenger? 🪿 #transit

@bridainep.bsky.social Nice talk today at UTC! In one of your slides you talked a bit about Sean being pronounced as either Shane or Shaun depending on diacritics. I would be curious if you could elaborate on the etymology of these two names and how the vowel sound changed!

There need to be consequences for leaders who avoid solving the root causes of problems. A first step: institute a threshold for ATC staffing (if one exists, it clearly isn't enough), and when an airport falls below the threshold, don't clear flights to land until more controllers come on duty.

A pluggable calendar API was part of an earlier version of the proposal, but it was dropped due to complexity and limited use cases. You can read more about the reasoning and options in github.com/tc39/proposa....

Hi! Thanks for the suggestions. A calendar-like abstraction for times of day was considered (called a "time scale" or "time calendar"), but it was not included due to limited use cases. It could still be added later.

3. An additional field larger than months but smaller than years was considered, but it was ultimately rejected because it doesn't translate well across locales and calendars. For example, there are Quarters, Seasons, Semesters, Trimesters. We suggest clients build these on top of Temporal.

2. Additional calendar systems such as the Christian liturgical calendar can be added later after they land in CLDR. There are multiple open CLDR issues for supporting more calendars. This is less a "design flaw" and more a resourcing issue. ...

A big accomplishment! As a champion, it is rewarding to move the needle on dates and times not only in JavaScript but across the industry, especially for non-Gregorian calendars. And as an implementer, ICU4X was born in part out of Temporal and now powers Chrome, Boa, and Kiesel. 🎉

I am absolutely a fan of upgraded train cars on regional trains, like the Keihan railway between Osaka and Kyoto. Every city should have these. 🚇

I started using Transit App more frequently after Google Maps removed the advanced timetable route searching feature. Apparently I'm in a small minority for wanting to see more than the top 4 results.

I still can't reproduce this. But, it's really important to give feedback, which does feed into product decisions. Google loves to run A/B tests, and it's important to give signals that your CUJ is being broken.

I use Transit in the Bay Area and it works well, though when I'm traveling it doesn't always have the city covered. I also use company-specific apps like the BART App for better real time data.

I've heard people describe the Oakland Ballers as a "low-level minor league team". Wrong: they are a team of high-caliber players disenfranchised from MLB, like their fans. Just look at Bufford, Almanza, Chewy, etc, all very talented, and manager Aaron Miles, a World Series alum. #LetsGoOakland ⚾
