highlights of the new mastodon design: - filtered posts are now visible - search is now under "trending" - space-wasting "translate" button - composing new toots is shoved into a corner

Dear @firefox.com design team, how am I supposed to get rid of the "Sign in to sync" banner or is it intended to forever take up valuable screen space in the side menu?

I am still very puzzled how "Find in selection" in VS Code's find dialog is supposed to be used. Because every time the search runs, it ... resets your selection.

actual sign-in flow I witnessed on a website the other day: - enter your email adress - we sent a code to your email address - we sent a code to your phone number - enter your 6-digit passcode (they don't have real passwords)

I wrote a new post about the privacy risks of on-phone agents like Apple’s new Siri, and how private inference isn’t any sort of silver bullet. blog.cryptographyengineering.com/2026/06/09/a...

The future of Siri, or: why private inference isn’t private enough
Yesterday Apple announced a big step towards deploying real AI in their Siri ecosystem. In most ways this is good and inevitable: Siri is one of the world’s most widely-used voice agents, and…

very fun bug on my new laptop: ssh'ing somewhere the first few times after a boot semi-reliably caused a soft lockup in iwlwifi. the only way you'd notice without checking dmesg is because input handling would freeze. fixed by turning off power saving in the driver.

According to all known laws of RFC4291, there is no way a link-local IP should be routed on the internet. The internet, of course, does it anyway because it doesn't care what the RFC thinks is impossible.

Had to fix a PC yesterday where the SSD showed as too big on Windows or an empty RAID on Linux and would refuse to be erased. Turns out it was an Intel RAID volume, which persisted even though AHCI mode was configured. The RAID configuration menu was hidden - obviously - because RAID was disabled. 🤦

OpenAI will, starting in 2028, have to start paying $30bn a year to Oracle, $28bn to Microsoft for Azure, and also $2.9bn to CoreWeave for compute. That’s $60.9 billion *in compute costs alone*. This company is an absolute joke and should be treated as such. www.theinformation.com/articles/ope...
OpenAI’s planned shift from Microsoft to Stargate wouldn’t happen overnight. The company’s spending on Microsoft-owned data centers should ramp up significantly in the next few years, more than doubling from $13 billion this year to $28 billion in 2028. The spending forecast is based on contracts signed between the two companies, OpenAI indicated. OpenAI could end up spending more with Microsoft for data centers than it indicated in the forecasts if Microsoft chooses to build additional data center capacity through 2030.
